In Central Pennsylvania the District 3 Sectional Tournaments were rushed to a finish in both Class AA and AAA on Saturday. Full brackets and team scores can be found at Triple J Bout Masters.

In Class AA only two Sectional Tournaments take place to determine qualifiers for the District 3 Tournament next weekend. In the Section 1 Tournament familiar foes took to the mats as rivals Boiling Springs and Bermudian Springs dominated the field. Bermudian Springs narrowly won the Team Championship by a mere 1.5 points over Boiling Springs as the two finished with 214.0 points and 212.5 points respectively. Hanover’s Ian Brown remained undefeated on the season by tearing through the 132 lbs. bracket. Brown, ranked #1 in the State, faced #4 State Ranked Boiling Springs junior Kyle Shoop and proved why he is considered one of the top seniors in the State by racking up a (17-3) major in the finals.

In the District 3 Class AA Section 2 Tournament several interesting outcomes occurred at Annville-Cleona High School. Right off the bat at 106 lbs. the #1 ranked wrestler in the State, John Lobeck from Lancaster Catholic, was defeated by Bishop McDevitt freshman John Pipa (4-2). Although an upset on paper, Pipa entered the Sectional Tournament ranked #10 in the State and it is not surprising to see him knock off sophomore John Lobeck. At 113 lbs. Lancaster Catholic earned an upset for themselves as junior Mark Goldbach downed Bishop McDevitt freshman Jalin Hankerson (2-0) in the finals. Bishop McDevitt headlines continued into 120 lbs. where junior and older brother David Pipa saw his season come to an end after being disqualified in the semifinals while facing Hamburg Area’s Sean Stanish. Details surrounding the disqualification were not immediately available. Stanish went on the win the Tournament. Bishop McDevitt freshman Zane Black picked up three falls in under three minutes to capture his first career Sectional Championship. Teammate and fellow freshman Cole Nye (Bishop McDevitt) moved up to 220 lbs. for the post-season and the switch seemed to pay off. Nye, the third seed, handled the second seed Vanyel Leytham-Peterson of Columbia (9-3) to advance to the finals where he captured the Sectional Championship with a (5-4) decision over Kutztown junior Kody Reichart.

Section I Tournament was full of talented weight-classes and exciting bouts. In a match-up of two top 20 State Ranked wrestlers at 106 lbs., freshmen foes Aaron Rump (Chambersburg Area) and William Kaldes (Cumberland Valley) clashed in the finals. Rump was victorious (3-1) in their first meeting last month but this time around Kaldes reversed the decision and won his first career Sectional Championship with a (2-1) decision. At 120 lbs. another pair of freshmen met as Chandler Olson (Shippensburg Area) and Cal Reichart (Cumberland Valley) did battle. Olson entered the Sectional Tournament with only two defeats but left with three as Reichart was victorious (5-1) in the finals at 120 lbs. In a loaded 132 lbs. weight-class sophomore Jonathan Ross (Northern York) was able to outlast Big Spring senior Greg Warner in the finals (4-2) to capture the Sectional Championship. In yet another loaded weight-class, Shippensburg Area senior Dylan Herb downed returning PIAA State Medalist Tommy Rayhart (Big Spring) in the finals (3-2 TB).

In the Section 2 Tournament Middletown Area senior Zach Ulerick made his season debut and rolled to a Sectional Championship at 120 lbs. Central Dauphin was without two wrestlers, including 182 lbs. junior Steven McNeal, with skin conditions that held them out of competition.

In the Section 3 Tournament the anticipated match-up at 106 lbs. between returning PIAA State runner-up Connor Sheehan (Solanco) and PIAA State Qualifier Decin Schnupp (Warwick) did not take place as Schnupp injury defaulted in the finals to Sheehan. Solanco’s Wyatt Jennings used three pins, including one in sudden victory, to capture the 126 lbs. Championship title. Senior Cortlandt Schuyler (Manheim Township) continued his impressive season rolling to the 138 lbs. Championship with a (9-5) win over Lucas Ortiz (Conestoga Valley) in the finals. At 285 lbs. Solanco senior Thomas Haines began his fourth and final post-season with a (11-4) win in the finals at 285 lbs. over PIAA State Qualifier Joey Goodhart (Hempfield).

At the Section 4 Tournament Wilson West Lawn’s Connor Moyer earned a (9-4 SV) victory in the finals over returning PIAA State Qualifier Daniel Grant (Twin Valley) at 126 lbs. Despite being upset by Elizabethtown Area’s Chad Rosenberger last month by fall, Oley Valley senior and 2x PIAA State Medalist Joey Fick earned a (3-0) decision over Mike Hafer (Wilson West Lawn) in the finals at 132 lbs. Wilson West Lawn senior Parker Eidle helped secure the Team Championship for the Bulldogs when he downed Garden Spot’s Will Finkey (5-3) in the finals. Garden Spot senior Ben Swarr continued his pinning dominance at 170 lbs. winning the Sectional Championship with three first periods falls.

In the Section 5 Tournament freshman Zurich Storm (New Oxford) held on for a (5-4 TB) victory over Brandon Rodriguez (Dover Area) to claim the 106 lbs. Section 5 Championship. Dallastown Area swept 126 lbs. – 138 lbs. capturing Championships in three straight weights. Rodney Sunday won 126 lbs. weight-class with three falls in under 1 minute; Nick Sheilds won the 132 lbs. weight-class picking up two falls including one in the finals over Spring Grove Area’s Dakota Laughman; and Wesley Hoover dominated 138 lbs. en route to the Sectional Championship. Chance Marsteller (Kennard Dale) remained undefeated and unchallenged capturing his fourth Sectional Championship. Freshman 220 lbs. wrestler Seth Janney dominated picking up three falls en route to his first Sectional Championship.

METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE 4TH QUALIFIER FROM 2013-2014 CLASS AAA SECTION TOURNAMENTS:

Beginning this year, District 3 will advance the fourth qualifier to the PIAA Southcentral Region and District 3-AAA Wrestling Championships at each weight as follows:

All five Class AAA sections automatically advance the top three wrestlers in each weight class to the regional tournament. The regional tournament uses a 16-man bracket, thus the need for a fourth qualifier from one section to fill the bracket. In the past, District 3 designated the section with the most returning PIAA medalists as the section that would advance the additional qualifier at all weights.

This year, the section whose top 8 seeded wrestlers have the highest average of the Average Points per Bout (APB) used to seed wrestlers at each weight will be awarded the fourth qualifier to regionals. By example, if Section I’s 106-pounders have the highest average APB, Section I will receive the additional qualifier at 106. If Section III’s 113-pounders have the highest average APB, Section III will receive the additional qualifier at 113. This process will be used for all 14 weight classes.
