Pennsylvania's Statistics from the NCAA National Tournament

The WPIAL had the most NCAA Qualifiers with 17 and also came away with the most All-Americans with five. When it came to a District’s winning percentage District 4 squeaked out first place in large part to Penn State’s undefeated National Champion Zain Retherford (Benton Area) who went (5-0).  District 10, who had two NCAA Qualifiers, had the second highest with 55.6% thanks to former Reynolds teammates Mason Beckman (Lehigh) and Austin Matthews (Edinboro) who had a combined Tournament record of (5-4). Overall Pennsylvania’s 62 National Qualifiers had a combined Tournament record of (107-123) which was a 46.5% win percentage. Photo of Zach Zavatsky by Marc Billet for PA Power Wrestling.

Of the 62 NCAA Qualifiers from Pennsylvania in 2016 a promising 38 are eligible to return next season. Pennsylvania will graduate 24 seniors who qualified for Nationals and seven of the twelve All-Americans from the Keystone State have at least one year of eligibility remaining.

Often times Pennslyvania was their own worst enemy. A total of 16 matches in the 2016 NCAA National Tournament were between two Pennslyvania wrestlers. Three of those matches took place the consolation blood round where the winner was guaranteed a Top 8 finish and the losers season was over.
