Parker, Marstellar, & Preisch Lead Pennsylvania Contingent at Journeymen Collegiate Classic

TROY, N.Y. – The second weekend of the 2017-2018 college wrestling season wrapped up with the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College. Two Pennsylvania programs, Lehigh and Lock Haven, took part in the event along with numerous Pennsylvania natives competing for out-of-state schools. Lehigh’s Scott Parker (Pennridge) knocked off three ranked opponents to earn the Hammer Award as Outstanding Wrestler and lead a pack of ten Pennsylvania wrestlers that went undefeated on the day. This marked the second straight year that this event has taken place with its unique format where wrestlers are broken into separate pools by seed to compete in a round-robin tournament. All told, eleven Division 1 programs participated in the event that showcased some of the nation’s best.

Parker defeated No. 14 Josh Terao of American (6-4) and No. 17 Dennis Gustafson of Virginia Tech (3-1 SV) in sudden victory to set up a rematch of last season’s Southern Scuffle finals with No. 3 Kaid Brock, which was a tie match when Parker was injured and had to default. This installment in the budding rivalry between the 2017 All Americans saw Brock win the takedown battle 3-1, but Parker walked away with the win after scoring a six point move in the final moments of the third period.

Although Parker came away with wins over three ranked opponents, he was not entirely happy with his performance. “I could have wrestled better, especially in the match against Brock,” said Parker. “I was tentative and didn’t really get anything going, so I need to make a lot of adjustments there. I thought the team wrestled well, though. The guys had a lot of fight and I think this is a special team. I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.”

In one of the premier matches of the day between Pennsylvania natives, Parker’s teammate Ryan Preisch (Milton – 184) scored a takedown in sudden victory to defeat No. 7 Zack Zavatsky of Virginia Tech (Greater Latrobe). 

Other Lehigh wrestlers to finish the day undefeated were Pennsylvania natives Darian Cruz (Bethlehem Catholic – 125) and Ian Brown (Hanover – 157),  joined by New Jersey native Jordan Kutler (Blair Academy – 174).

Chance Marstellar (Kennard-Dale) and DJ Fehlman (Warren Area) led the Lock Haven contingent by finishing 3-0 at 165 and 133, respectively. Both were dominant on the day, not surrendering a single takedown in their six combined matches while racking up four bonus point wins. 

Marstellar’s wins came by way of an (8-3) win over Drew Longo of Lehigh, a fall in just (1:09) over American’s Michael Eckhart, and an (8-1) decision of No. 18 Cole Walter of Lehigh. Fehlman’s day consisted of a (15-0 – 4:30) tech fall over Garrett Lambert of Hofstra, a (9-2) win over Army’s Lane Peters, and an (11-3) major decision of the Citadel’s Andrew Szalwinski.

Lock Haven’s Alex Klucker (East Pennsboro – 157) followed his 5-0 day at last weekend’s Clarion Open with a 2-1 performance, only falling to Lehigh’s Ian Brown in a wild (11-10) match that saw both wrestlers on their backs and what was very nearly a fall for Klucker.

Other Pennsylvania natives to go undefeated on the day were Eric Hong of American (North Allegheny – 157), Noah Stewart of Army (Mifflin County – 184), and Andrew Dunn of Virginia Tech (Bethlehem Catholic – 184).

In one of the bigger surprises of the day, Canon-McMillan native and two-time All American Solomon Chishko of Virginia Tech was defeated (8-1) by Oklahoma State’s Geo Martinez in the 149A pool finals. The Cowboy junior, who was previously an All American for the now-defunct Boise State program, scored a takedown in the bout’s opening period and never allowed Chishko to get into an offensive rhythm.

Fourteen other Pennsylvania wrestlers finished with just one loss on the day, five in second and nine in third.
