NCAA Wrestling is back and opening weekend provided fans with a taste of what to expect over the next five months. Pennsylvania Wrestling was well represented across the Nation with a number of open tournament champions and quality wins by Keystone State natives. Leading the charge were both veterans and rookies of the NCAA Wrestling world.

The weekend highlight came on Sunday at Princeton where the NWCA All-Star Classic took place. Two Pennsylvania wrestlers competed in the main event with NCAA National Champion Darian Cruz (Lehigh/Bethlehem Catholic) and Pete Renda (N.C. State/Brandywine Heights). Cruz, ranked #2 in the Nation by Flo was unable to hold off returning NCAA All-American #5 Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State) at 125 lbs. falling (8-5) to the sophomore. At 184 lbs. senior #3 Pete Renda began his final campaign with a victory at the All-Star Classic. The 2016 NCAA All-American defeated #4 Drew Foster (Northern Iowa) in a narrow (4-2) bout. 

Arizona State sophomore Josh Shields (Franklin Regional) was an NCAA qualifier last season and entered the year ranked #14 in the Nation at 157 lbs. by Flo. To just get into the Sun Devil’s starting lineup the PA State Champion had a tall task with 2014 NCAA National Champion Jason Tsirtsis. Shields defeated Tsirtsis in the intrasquad meet (3-2) last week leaving head coach Zeke Jones in an interesting situation.

At the Michigan Open Josh Shields continued to impress as he won the Championship title at 157 lbs. to kick off his season. In the semifinals Shields defeated Wisconsin senior Andrew Crone, who came in ranked #18 in the Nation by Flo, by a (5-2) score. In the finals Josh faced the top seed and returning Michigan State Open Champion #11 Colin Heffernan (Central Michigan). With the score knotted at (4-4) the two went into tiebreaker with Shields able to come away with a (5-4 TB) decision over the #11 ranked wrestler in the Nation.

True freshman Mikey Labriola (Nebraska/Bethlehem Catholic) opened his collegiate career with a bang at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open. Labriola took out two ranked opponents and claimed the Championship title at 174 lbs. Stay tuned for an exclusive interview with Labriola on PA Power Wrestling.
