Pennsylvania Wrestlers Punch Their Tickets to Super 32 at Mars Qualifier

MARS, PA – For the first time ever Pennsylvania hosted two early entry Super 32 Qualifiers with the first taking place at Muhlenberg College and this past weekend in Western PA at Mars Area High School. On Saturday Mars hosted Pennsylvania Wrestling legend Cary Kolat for a camp before the early entry tournament on Sunday. The top four finishers at each weight earned the chance to register early for the prestigious Super 32 Challenge in the end of October.

At 108 lbs. 2017 PJW Junior High State Champion Matt Sarbo (Altoon/Young Guns) started his freshman season off with a Championship title at the Mars Early Entry picking up a (3-1) victory over fellow freshman and 2017 PJW Junior High State Champion Conner Redinger (Quaker Valley/OMP) in the quarterfinals. In the finals Sarbo once again took down another 2017 PJW Junior High State Champion, upending freshman Joe Fischer (South Park/Team Naumen) with a (4-1) victory. Redinger would take third at 108 lbs. while freshman Amonn Ohl (State College/Team Blackdog) finished fourth.

2017 PIAA State Qualifier Kyle Burkholder (Hempfield Area/Young Guns) captured the 115 lbs. Championship with a (4-1) win over fellow 2017 PIAA State Qualifier Trenton Donahue (DuBois/Young Guns). Peters Township sophomore Bryce Wilkes (Team Naumen) fell (10-6) to Donahue in the semifinals but bounced back for third. 

At 122 lbs. sophomore Cole Wilson (Northeastern/Team Naumen), a 2017 PIAA State Qualifier at 106 lbs., is up in weight but wrestling well as he rolled to the championship title. Wilson picked up a (15-0) tech-fall, pin in 0:59, (5-0) decision, and a (10-0) major decision in the finals. There he defeated Mifflin County sophomore Derek Burk, a 2017 NW Regional qualifier. 2017 PJW Junior High State Medalist Tyler Cymmerman (Derry Area/All-American) won three straight matches in the consolation round to take fourth. In the third place match Ty lost to Nicholas Vafiadis of Virginia.

Hopewell junior Jacob Ealy (Gladiators), a 2x SW Regional Qualifier, won five straight matches at 128 lbs. to claim the Championship over Davin Rhoads of Kentucky (10-2). Ealy was the lone Keystone State wrestler in the top four at 128 lbs. with Brashear junior Jo-Jo Mwete (Team Naumen) and Jason Geyer (Seneca Valley/OMP) each falling one win shy of the top four.

3x PIAA State Qualifier Caleb Morris (Waynesburg Central/Young Guns) grinded his way to the Championship at 134 lbs. with four straight regular decision victories. In his first bout Morris got by sophomore and returning PIAA State Qualifier Kenny Kiser (Saegertown) with a (1-0) win. In the finals Caleb defeated 2x PIAA State Qualifier Jeff Boyd of McDowell (4-3). Kiser bounced back for third while Logan Wise (Mifflin County) took fourth. 

At 140 lbs. Canon-McMillan senior Tim Hristko (Quest) had an impressive showing earning two major decisions in three wins en route to the Championship title. His closest bout came in the quarterfinals against Grayson Charles (Solanco) picking up an (8-3) win. Charles, a senior and 3x SC Regional Qualifier, took fourth. Super frosh Thayne Lawrence (Frazier/Quest), who in 2017 was third in the State, started his sophomore year with a championship title at 147 lbs. Lawrence earned a tech-fall, pin, and major decision to advance into the finals. There he took on senior and 3x SW Regional Qualifier Alex Hornfeck (Mars Area) who last season competed at 126 lbs. but is up 20 lbs. Hornfeck defeated PIAA State Qualifier Joe Demor (South Side Beaver/Quest) then downed South Fayette’s Mike Cusick before pinning Jackson Gray (Mount Lebanon) in the semifinals. In the finals Lawrence, despite giving up a takedown and back points in the first period, came out on top of Hornfeck with a (9-7) decision. Cusick ended in third place while Seneca Valley sophomore Drew Vlasnik (OMP) took fourth.

At 154 lbs. Waynesburg Central junior Trey Howard (Young Guns) won a solid 154 lbs. bracket defeating Brandon Matthews (Peters Township/Quest) in sudden victory (3-1 SV) to open up the tournament before dispatching Kiski Area sophomore Jack Blumer (Mat Factory) in the semifinals. Howard would go on to win the title over Jax Leonard of Kentucky. Joining Howard from Pennsylvania in the top four was Kiski Area’s Cam Connor (Quest) who took third. The junior and 2017 PIAA State Qualifier avenged an opening round defeat to Anthony Carman of West Virginia in the third place bout winning (8-3).

It was an all WPIAL affair at 162 lbs. with returning PIAA State Medalist Jason Montgomery (Bethel Park/Team Naumen) coming out on top of a stacked bracket. The senior picked up three regular decision victories including a (3-0) win over sophomore Nicholas Delp (Kiski Area) in the finals. In the semifinals Montgomery fought for a (3-1) decision over 2017 PIAA State Qualifier Luke Stout (Mount Lebanon/Quest) who would bounce back to take third. Taking fourth was Montour senior Nick Marsico (Team Naumen). Like 162 lbs. the top four wrestlers at 172 lbs. all came from the WPIAL with Waynesburg Central senior Kyle Homet (Kurtboy Trained) taking first place. The 2x PIAA State Qualifier won by forfeit over Greensburg Salem senior Jesse Quatse (All-American) in the finals. Junior Jon Hoover (North Allegheny/Pitbull) was third and Jeff Market (Peters Township/OMP) fourth.

Freedom Area junior and 2x SW Regional Qualifier Bryson Miller claimed 184 lbs. with two straight victories including a (5-0) win over sophomore Austin Walley (Elwood City/Gladiators) in the finals. Ryan Weinzen (Norwin) was third and Gehrig Hutchinson (Baldwin/Team Naumen) was fourth. 2017 PIAA State Qualifier Parker McClellan (Altoona/Young Guns) pinned senior Danny Starr (Kiski Area/Mat Factory) in the finals of 197 lbs. to claim the Championship title. Impressive freshman Jake Hart (Hampton/PWC) was third.

Chartiers Valley senior Shamil Zaynullaev (Dirty Horseshoe), a 3x SW Regional Qualifier, defeated the only other wrestler in the bracket Ryan Howard (Young Guns) by a (12-3) margin in the finals of 222 lbs. Wrapping out the day at heavyweight 2017 PIAA State Medalist Bishop McCoy (South Side Beaver) lost by fall to Derek Elrod of Ohio in his first match but came back to take third over Josh Strobel (Armstrong/Mat Factory). Pennsylvania freshman Jalen Stephens (Meyersdale/Independent) was the runner-up at heavyweight falling to Elrod (4-2) in the finals.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
