Pennsylvania Wins Fargo Junior Freestyle National Title With 14 All-Americans
For the first time since 2009 Team Pennsylvania has won the Junior National Freestyle Championship in Fargo, ND. The Keystone State ended the two day Tournament with 58 points, six ahead of runner-up Minnesota (56 points), and twelve better than Team Illinois (46 points). It was a significant improvement from their 2015 eighth place finish. Overall 49 wrestlers from Pennsylvania competed in the Freestyle Junior Division with 14 All-Americans including one Champion (Photo of Team PA by Rollie Stillings).
Leading the charge for Pennsylvania was 2x PIAA undefeated State Champion Gavin Teasdale (Jefferson Morgan) and 2015 Cadet Freestyle World Champion Jarod Verkleeren (Belle Vernon Area). Gavin Teasdale made his return to Fargo competing for the first time since 2013 when he was a Cadet National Champion at 88 lbs. Now he is entering his junior season, verbally committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes, and considered one of the top light-weights in the Nation.
Competing at 120 lbs. Teasdale would have to get through a talented field of competitors including Drew Mattin (Ohio) and Brandon Courtney (Arizona). After picking up a tech-fall and fall in his first two bouts Teasdale took on fellow PA wrestler Matt Parker (Pennridge). In a rematch of the 2015 POWERade semifinals Teasdale was victorious (6-4) and advanced into the quarterfinals. There Teasdale took on, and defeated, 2x Ohio State Champion and 2015 Fargo Junior Freestyle National Runner-up Drew Mattin in a (3-2) bout. After defeating Mattin, a Michigan recruit, Teasdale would have to defeat 2015 Fargo Junior Freestyle National Champion Brandon Courtney (Arizona). Courtney, a 2x Arizona State Champion who is committed to the Sun Devils, was the top seed at 120 lbs. having won the 113 lbs. Junior National Title in 2015. Teasdale continued his run back to the Fargo spotlight defeating Courtney (4-1) and returning to the National finals. In the finals Gavin took on Oklahoma wrestler Dalton Duffield who finished his high school career as a Oklahoma State Runner-up only falling to stud Daton Fix. The Oklahoma Sooner recruit advanced into the finals with an impressive performance which included a win over Danny Vega (Arizona). It may not have been the same dominance as 2013 when Teasdale competed at a mere 88 lbs. but the Jefferson Morgan star capped his first ever Junior National Freestyle Championship with a (8-6) decision over Duffield.
The second Pennsylvania Junior National finalist in Freestyle was Belle Vernon Area rising senior Jarod Verkleeren. Although he was unable to compete in the individual post-season for the Leopards Verkleeren has not slowed up in the 2016 post-season. The 2015 Cadet Freestyle World Champion was a FloNationals Champion at 145 lbs. and returned to his Freestyle speciality in Fargo. Verkleeren picked up three tech-falls by winning (10-0) in all three bouts. In the quarterfinals Jarod faced 2016 Illinois State Champion Yahya Thomas who was 2015 Cadet National Freestyle All-American where he earned a (5-2) victory. In the semifinals Verkleeren cruised to a (10-0) tech-fall over Colorado’s Ryan Deakin. In the finals Verkleeren faced 2015 Fargo Cadet Double National Champion Anthony Artalona of Florida. The 2x Florida State Champion was able to outlast Verkleeren in a (2-1) match.
Pennsylvania also earned four impressive Fargo Junior Double All-Americans. After winning the Greco-Roman Junior National title for the second time in a row Jaret Lane (Southern Columbia Area) finished in fourth place at 106 lbs. in Freestyle. Kiski Prep rising senior Eric Hong placed sixth in Greco-Roman and followed it up with an impressive third place finish in Freestyle. Competing at 160 lbs. Hong went (6-1) to secure third place in a talented bracket.
The third Pennsylvania Junior Double All-American was Team Pennsylvania sensation Miles Lee. The rising junior, who competes for South Philadelphia in District XI, is an aggressive wrestler who has a background in MMA training and got his wrestling start with the Philadelphia Beat the Streets program. Finishing third in Greco-Roman days earlier Miles Lee rode the wave of momentum all the way into the 195 lbs. Junior National Freestyle Semifinals. Securing his second All-American finish in Fargo Miles fell in the semifinals and would end up in sixth place. It was an improvement from his (4-2) finish in 2015. The fourth Keystone State Double All-American came at 220 lbs. when Anthony Piscopo (LaSalle College) placed fourth. Days before the Columbia recruit placed fifth in Greco-Roman and advanced into the Junior National Freestyle Semifinals. There Piscopo fell to eventual Champion Keegan Moore (Minnesota) by tech-fall. Anthony bounced back in the consolation semifinals but injury defaulted in the third place match to fellow Keystone State grappler Francis Duggan (North Allegheny).
Like Piscopo, Duggan’s only defeat came at the hands of stud Keegan Moore. The North Allegheny rising junior had an impressive (7-1) tournament record picking up three falls and three tech-falls. In 2014 Duggan competed in Fargo at 195 lbs. and finished seventh in Cadets. Also finishing third in Fargo was Central Cambria star Max Murin. The rising senior was a 2x Fargo Cadet Freestyle All-American as he placed second and fourth. The 2015 PIAA State Champion continued his success in Fargo competing at 132 lbs. and only falling to eventual Champion Ian Parker (Michigan) in the quarterfinals. Bouncing back Max won his next four matches to finish in third place and had an overall Tournament record of (8-1). Blair Academy’s Mike Madara, who is from Nazareth, PA, picked up several notable wins in his (5-2) record and fifth place finish at 113 lbs. in Fargo. The 2016 National Prep Medalist had an impressive win in the quarterfinals over Minnesota stud and returning Fargo Cadet National Freestyle All-American Patrick McKee. In a wild bout Madara came out on top (16-14) and advanced into the semifinals where he fell to eventual National Champion Nic Aguilar (California). Mike ended up finishing in fifth place and helped Pennsylvania secure the Championship title.
Three wrestlers finished in seventh place as Dan Moran (Northampton Area), Trent Hidlay (Mifflin County) and Austin Bell (Belle Vernon Area) all secured All-American honors. At 126 lbs. 3x PIAA State Medalist Dan Moran took home seventh place with a (7-2) Tournament record. In the seventh place bout Moran faced fellow Pennsylvania wrestler Jakob Campbell (Boyertown Area) and picked up a (8-4) decision. Trent Hidlay improved on his eighth place finish from 2015 when he was a Cadet. Competing at 160 lbs. the 2016 PIAA State Runner-up went (6-2) to finish in seventh. Pittsburgh recruit Austin Bell (Belle Vernon Area) has already moved into his dorm room at Pitt but made a worthwhile trip to Fargo. Bell last placed in Fargo back in 2013 when he was a Cadet and finished sixth at 160 lbs.
