Snow has forced officials to condense this year’s District 3 Championships, but that doesn’t mean action isn’t heating up on the mat.
The Class AA semifinals are in the books, and Boiling Springs was dominant in putting eight wrestlers in the finals.
It comes as no surprise that three of those eight finalists are involved in our five championship bouts to watch. The finals are tentatively scheduled to begin between 12:30 and 1 p.m.
113
Joe Lobeck, Lancaster Catholic vs. Coy Campbell, Upper Dauphin: Lobeck, ranked No. 1 in the state, finished fourth in the state a year ago, and Campbell is a defending District 3-AA champ. The two wrestlers are a combined 62-7 this season.
120
John Pipa, Bishop McDevitt vs. Andrew Wert, Trinity: It isn’t often that you put a bout involving a freshman on this list, but Wert is worthy. He is 30-3 this season and ranked 10th in the state. Pipa needs no introduction. He is a district champ and state runner-up that holds the No. 1 ranking in Pennsylvania.
126
Grant Bond, Boiling Springs vs. David Pipa, Bishop McDevitt: Bond, a PIAA fifth-place finisher a year ago, looks like he has recovered from his foot injury. Pipa is 24-3 on the season and is ranked eighth in the state, one spot behind Bond.
152
Jeffrey Inman, Annville-Cleona vs. Tyler Kauffman, Boiling Springs: A district champ and runner-up from a year ago lock up in this bout. Inman is 26-2 and ranked No. 7 in the state. Kauffman has been on a tear since his return to the lineup and is 10th.
160
John Vaughn, Boiling Springs vs. Luke Funck, Northern Lebanon: Vaughn is a two-time state qualifier and district runner-up. Funck was fourth a year ago at districts and is 14th in the state. The Bubblers senior, ranked seventh, beat Funck in a 4-3 nail-biter in team districts.

Five must-see District 3-AAA Championship finals on tap this afternoon
Jeremy Elliott – PennLive
Excitement spread through the crowd during the morning District 3-AAA Championship semifinal round at Hersheypark Arena.
There were surprises, close shaves and huge tech falls and pins scattered throughout the 14 weight classes. And it’s only going to get better.
All finalists make states, which means these wrestlers can go after it in the finals. Here are five Class AAA championship bouts to watch.
113
Austin DeSanto, Exeter vs. Devin Schnupp, Warwick: DeSanto has a high motor, and Schnupp can slow down a truck. The two wrestlers are a combined 85-2 this year and are ranked fifth and fourth in the state. This could be the best final of the entire District 3 Championship.
120
Tyshawn White, Central Dauphin vs. Brett Kulp, Exeter: Two state placers meet in what should be an entertaining final. White, third a year ago, is also a defending district champ that is ranked No. 2 in the state. Kulp, a PIAA fifth-place finisher, is 44-1 and ranked fourth in the state.
126
Chandler Olson, Shippensburg vs. Owen Wherley, South Western: These lower weights are loaded. Olson placed seventh in the state a year ago and is a district runner-up. Wherley is a state qualifier that is ranked eighth in the state. The wrestler are a combined 68-5.
145
Patrick Duggan, Cumberland Valley vs. Jonathan Ross, Northern: Normally, we would bypass this one but the smack talk over the last seven days has made this a must-see. Duggan (42-1) is a three-time state placer and is No. 2 in the state, while Ross (31-3) is ranked 11th in the state. This one could get chippy.
182
Casey Glunt, James Buchanan vs. Josh Colello, Cedar Cliff: Glunt, a PIAA sixth-place finisher last year, comes into this grudge match with a spotless 30-0 record and a lofty No. 2 state ranking. Colello is a two-time state qualifier with a No. 6 ranking. I expect a physical slugfest in this bout.
