Jeremy Elliott’s Top 5 Quarterfinals to Watch

CANONSBURG: Impressive tech falls. Expected pins. Seeded wrestlers falling out of contention and into the consolation brackets.

There has been plenty of action in the early stages of the prestigious Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School.

And it’s about to get better.

The quarterfinals are on tap for 7:30 p.m. Monday. Here is a look at five bouts that are a must-see for high school wrestling fans.

106: Alan Diltz, Jr, Benton vs. Logan Macri, Fr, Canon-McMillan: Diltz is a state qualifier from a year ago that is ranked No. 2 at this weight in Class AA, according to papowerwrestling.com. He faces an upstart freshman in Macri, who won the Cumberland Valley Kickoff and is ranked No. 3 in the state in Class AAA. Macri’s only two losses this season came at the Walsh Ironman.

120: Cole Matthews, Fr, Reynolds vs. Brendan Howard, Sr, Jefferson-Morgan: Matthews is the younger brother of Austin Matthews and was one of the top freshman coming into the season. He beat West Virginia state champ Logan Grass to make the quarters. Howard made states two years ago and trains at Young Guns with Spencer Lee and Gavin Teasdale. Need we say more? He beat the No. 6 seed in the Round of 16.

126: Tate Ortz, Jr, Brookville vs. Gus Solomon, Franklin Regional: These Brookville wrestlers are tough. Ortz placed third at states a year ago and was sixth in last year’s Powerade. He takes his No. 2 state ranking into a quarterfinal tilt against Solomon, an under-rated member of the powerful Panthers squad. Solomon is unseeded, but he is better than his No. 15 state ranking.

145: Hayden Hidlay, Jr, Mifflin County vs. Jarod Verkleeran, So, Belle Vernon: We like Hidlay, a sixth-place finisher at states, to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish at the Powerade, but he will have a toughie against Verkleeran. The Leopards sophomore was a state qualifier a year ago and is ranked No. 3 in the state coming into this weekend’s tournament.

160: Devin Austin, Sr, Penn Trafford vs. D.J. Hollingshead, Sr, Altoona: Austin was a Powerade finalist a year ago but has failed to make states because of tough brackets. Still, he is ranked No. 2, two spots ahead of Hollingshead. The Altoona ace brings a No. 4 ranking and fourth-place finish in the PIAA Championships a year ago into this match. This has the potential to be one of the best quarterfinals of the night.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
