Joseph and Headlee Win at Flo's "Who's #1?"

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 8.53.13 PMHosted for the second year in a row at the ‘Snake Pit’, the Nation’s top high school wrestlers gathered in Lehigh University’s Grace Hall to set the record straight. FloWrestling once again presented the “Who’s #1” showcase that was set up almost as a MMA pay-per view for high school wrestling fans. Three Pennsylvania wrestlers were slated to compete with senior PIAA State Champion Vincenzo Joseph (Central Catholic) leading the way.

At 106 lbs. freshman Gavin Teasdale (Jefferson Morgan), considered the top freshman from PA and one of the best in the Nation, took on his rival from California, Cade Olivas. Both Teasdale and Olivas were FILA Cadet World Freestyle Team members for the United States in 2014. Olivas competed at 46 kg/104.4 lbs. where he took seventh place in the World. Teasdale was the U.S. representative at 42 kg/92.5 lbs. and took fifth in the World. The highly anticipated rookie match-up ended with a Cade Olivas victory (3-1) over Gavin Teasdale at 106 lbs.

Next up from Pennsylvania was Waynesburg Central senior A.C. Headlee at 132 lbs. The North Carolina recruit took on Minnesota junior Mitchell McKee from St. Michael-Albertville High School. Wrestling fans may remember the name from the emotional Minnesota State Finals last season that McKee won with his terminally ill father watching by his side. It was McKee’s opponent, who had just been pinned in the State finals, that showed a great deal of humbleness and emotion by embracing McKee’s father after walking of the mat. Following his sophomore season McKee continued his dominance and won an impressive USAW Freestyle Junior National Championship at 126 lbs. in Fargo, ND. McKee also announced that he will compete for the Minnesota Gophers following his high school career. It was Headlee, also a 2014 USAW Freestyle Junior National Medalist, that would prove why he is considered one of the top wrestlers in the Nation by downing McKee (5-3) at 132 lbs.

At 145 lbs. Pittsburgh Central Catholic senior Vincenzo Joseph took to the mat and faced off with a familier opponent in Freddy Stroker of Bettendorf, Iowa. Joseph faced Stroker in the semifinals of the USAW Freestyle Junior Nationals at 145 lbs. and earned a decisive (8-0) victory to advance into the finals. This time around the score was much closer but the winner remained Joseph as he earned a (3-2) victory at 145 lbs. The two could have a storied future as Joseph heads to Happy Valley next season to compete for Penn State while Stroker will join the Minnesota Gophers.
