FloNationals Pennsylvania Preview

It certainly doesn’t hurt that FloNationals returns to our backyard in 2014. And like a year ago – Keystone State wrestlers are flocking to IUP for an opportunity to wrestle with some of the best our Nation has to offer.

What I like most about this year’s Tournament is the amount of seniors that will be in attendance – even those who have already decided on where they will be continuing their wrestling careers. That isn’t to say the underclassmen of this Tournament are not impressive – they are – but it is nice to see wrestlers like Kyle Bova, Ryan Preisch, Evan Delong, Dom Forys, and Tom Sliegh still competing in April.

Overall a stud filled line-up of Pennslyvania wrestlers are going to be featured this weekend with a grand total of six (6) PIAA State Champions on the participant list. Below is a preview of the Pennslyvania wrestlers in each weight-class. I also ranked the top participants in each weight – just for fun! Check it out! You can visit the FloNationals website here – follow the action at TrackWrestling

Gage Curry (North Hills)

Gage Curry (North Hills)

At 106 lbs. a total of eight (8) wrestlers with PIAA Medals will take to the mats including 2x PIAA Class AAA State medalist Gage Curry (North Hills). Curry placed third in the 2013 FloNationals at 106 lbs. 2014 PIAA Class AA State runner-up John Pipa (Bishop McDevitt) has remained active early in the off-season wrestling for the second time in two weeks after finishing sixth at 113 lbs. in the NHSCA Freshman Nationals last weekend. 2x National Prep medalist Nick Lattanze (Malvern Prep) is an impressive sophomore who could make some noise at 106 lbs. Several PIAA State Medalists including Max Murin (Central Cambria), Riley Palmer (Council Rock South), Aaron Burkett (Chestnut Ridge), Sam Hepler (Tri-Valley), and senior Edgar Garcia (Avon Grove) will all compete for a spot on the medal stand. Five (5) other PIAA State Qualifiers add to the mix in a loaded 106 lbs. bracket. Eighth grade wrestlers Sam Sasso (Nazareth Area) and Caleb Morris (Waynesburg Central) are two accomplished youth wrestlers who will throw their hats in the high school ring. Below is a list of the PA wrestlers who will compete at 106 lbs. I think a total of four (4) wrestlers could earn medals at 106 lbs. (Curry, Pipa, Lattanze, and Murin).

*Late entry Brian Courtney (Athens Area) makes 106 lbs. even deeper. Courtney was a PIAA Class AA State third place finisher as a freshman.

Joe Wheeling (General McLane)

Joe Wheeling (General McLane)

Surprisingly the 113 lbs. bracket is rather slim for a weight that normally consists of younger wrestlers who compete year round. Regardless, Pennslyvania will have a handful of wrestlers who could earn a spot on the podium. 2014 PIAA State Class AAA Runner-up Joe Wheeling (General McLance) will be heading to West Virginia University next season to join older brother Tim on the Mountaineer wrestling team. Last season Wheeling came one win shy of placing at 106 lbs. in the FloNationals. Talented freshman Luke Landefeld (North Allegheny) is a hard-working wrestler who has the potential to upset higher seeded wrestlers. Last season as an eight grade wrestler Landefeld went (0-2) at 106 lbs. in the FloNationals. 2x PIAA Class AAA State qualifier Charlie Lenox (McDowell) could also win several matches at 113 lbs. Eighth grade wrestler Cole Matthews (Reynolds) is looking to follow in the foot steps of older brother Austin Matthews who was a PIAA State Champion who qualified for the NCAA Tournament this season for Clarion. Cole is an accomplished youth wrestler and the FloNational will be a good test for him. Below is a list of the PA wrestlers who will compete at 1113 lbs. I feel only one (1) or two (2) wrestlers will make it to the podium (Wheeling and Landefeld).

*Late entry Gregg Wert Jr. is an eighth grade wrestler who ill be a force to reckon with competing for Trinity (Camp Hill) next season.

Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe)

Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe)

Just has he made it two for two in PIAA State Championships sophomore Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) will attempt to make it two for two in FloNational Titles. The 2x PIAA Class AAA State Champion won the 2013 FloNational title at 106 lbs. with an impressive win over eighth grader Spencer Lee score (3-1). Lee, who is not registered in the 2014 FloNationals, went on to have an undefeated freshman campaign for Franklin Regional dominating his way to a PIAA Class AAA State Champion. Joining Pletcher are a group of viable opponents. Former PIAA Class AA State Champion George “Mickey” Phillippi (Derry Area) placed sixth at the 2013 FloNationals at 113 lbs. and is coming off a third place finish at the 2014 PIAA State Tournament. Southern Columbia Area freshman Todd Lane was a 2014 PIAA Class AA State runner-up at 120 lbs. and should continue that success into the FloNationals. Senior Tyrone Klump (Nazareth Area) will look to improve on a fifth place finish in last seasons FloNationals at 106 lbs. Last week Klump was a runner-up at the NHSCA Senior Nationals and enters as a 2x PIAA Class AAA State third place medalist. The dark horse of the group is Kiski Prep wrestler Justin Patrick. In his first season at Kiski Prep Patrick placed fourth at the National Prep Tournament at 120 lbs. Patrick, a 2013 FloNationals eighth place medalist, spent three season at Ligonier Valley High School where twice he finished at a PIAA Class AA fourth place medalist. Transferring to Kiski Prep Patrick received an extra year of eligibility. Additionally 2x PIAA Class AA State Medalist Tristan Law (Forest Hills) and freshman PIAA Class AAA State Medalist Chandler Olson (Shippinsburg Area) will compete for a spot on the medal stand. 2x PIAA Class AAA State Qualifier Shae Bloom (DuBois Area) placed sixth at 106 lbs. in the 2013 FloNationals and will have a tough time repeating that feat in 2014. Below is a look at all the Pennslyvania wrestlers who will be competing at 120 lbs. Call me crazy but I think Pennsylvania could earn six (6) medals at 120 lbs. With the depth of talent I don’t think it is that far fetched.

*Late entry Jake Gromacki (Cathedral Prep) is a 4x PIAA Class AAA State Medalist who is looking for another FloNationals medal.

Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area)

Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area)

You guessed it – another top heavy bracket that will feature a trio of WPIAL wrestlers who have all been ranked in the Nation this season. 2013 PIAA State Champion and junior Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area) had a disappointing trip to Hershey in 2014 finishing fourth at 126 lbs. Still, Krivus is considered one of the top 126 lbs. wrestlers in the Nation and will look to repeat as a FloNational Champion. Last season Krivus defeated 2x PIAA Class AA State Champion Darian Cruz (Bethlehem Catholic) in the finals at 120 lbs. (2-1 TB). Cruz finished as an NCAA All-American in his true-freshman season at Lehigh last month. Two other WPIAL stars will headline 126 lbs. with 2014 PIAA Class AAA third place medalist A.C. Headlee (Waynesburg Central) and North Allegheny senior Dom Forys. Forys was a 2x PIAA State Medalist in his career and this season he was the South West Regional fourth place finisher – falling to Headlee in an intense match. Headlee would go on to finish in third place at the PIAA State Tournament, improving on a sixth place finish from 2013. In the consolation finals Headlee upset Sam Krivus by fall. 2014 PIAA Class AAA State runner-up Zach Valley (Northampton Area) will hope to improve on his fifth place finish at last seasons FloNationals. Valley is a 3x PIAA State Medalist who defeated Krivus in the State semifinals in tie-breaker to advance into his first PIAA State Finals. Adding to the mix is 2x PIAA State Medalist Joey FIck (Oley Valley) who competed at 132 lbs. in his senior season. Below is a look at all the Pennsylvania wrestlers competing at 126 lbs. I think four (4) Keystone State wrestlers will rise to the podium (Krivus, Valley, Headlee, and Forys).

*Late entry Travis Stefanick (Nazareth Area) is a freshman who will add to an already stacked weight-class.

Chase Zemenak (Nazareth Area)

Chase Zemenak (Nazareth Area)

Two (2) PIAA State Runner-ups will highlight the 132 lbs. weight class with Chase Zemenak (Nazareth Area) and Kent Lane (Southern Columbia Area). Zemenak is a 3x PIAA Class AAA State medalist with 2014 being his highest finish. The Bloomsburg recruit will be joined by PIAA Class AA State runner-up Kent Lane. It was the juniors second PIAA State Medal after finishing in sixth place in 2013 and also earning a 2013 FloNationals sixth place medal at 120 lbs. Don’t count out Kane Area senior Cody Blankenship who holds a career record of (121-20). In 2014 the senior earned his first career PIAA State Medal finishing in third place. The dark horse at 132 lbs. is North Allegheny senior Jesse Rodgers. This season Rodgers was sidelined due to an injury that required surgery. Unable to return in time for the individual post-season Rodgers will again hit the mat at the 2014 FloNationals after finishing in sixth place in 2013 at 132 lbs. Rodgers will be heading to Rider next season taking with him a 2013 PIAA State fourth place medal. Joining his brother in the 2014 FloNationals is Matt Lattanze (Malvern Prep) who is a 2x National Prep medalist. This season the sophomore finished in fifth place for Malvern Prep. Impressive freshman Santino Bonnaccorsi (Bethel Park) was one win shy from qualifying for the PIAA State Tournament finishing in fourth place at the South West Regional Tournament. Another wrestler who has been knocking on the PIAA State Tournament door is Northern York sophomore Jonathan Ross who twice place in the South Central Regional. Below is a look at all the Pennsylvania wrestler who will be competing in the 2014 FloNationals. I think Pennsylvania will earn three (3) medals at 132 lbs. with (Zemenak, Lane, and Rodgers).

Brock Zacherl (Brookville Area)

Brock Zacherl (Brookville Area)

Clarion recruit and 2014 PIAA Class AA State Champion Brock Zacherl (Brookville Area) headlines the 138 lbs. weight-class. The State Champion and 3x PIAA State Medalist will look to improve on a third place finish at the 2013 FloNationals. Joining Zacherl are four recent PIAA State Medalist that include sophomore Jake Wentzel (South Park), senior Colby Ems (East Stroudsburg Area South), sophomore Kaleb Young (Punxsutawney Area), and sophomore Hayden Hidlay (Mifflin County). Wentzel earned his second straight PIAA State medal this season finishing in third place. Colby Ems made his third straight trip to Hershey and picked up his first career PIAA State Medal finishing in fourth place at 138 lbs. The 2014 PIAA State 138 lbs. bracket was a deep weight to say the least. Two of the wrestlers to earn medals this season were sophomores Kaleb Young and Hayden Hidlay. Despite defeating Young in the Northwest Regional finals, Hidlay fell to Young in the fifth place match. The two sophomores are both in search of their first medal at the FloNationals. A handful of other Pennsylvania wrestlers will challenge the top tier wrestlers such as Joey Alessandro (Hempfield Area). Greg Konieczny (LaSalle College), and Lucas Ortiz (Conestoga Valley). Keep an eye on two eighth grade wrestlers who will be competing in the high school division. Quentin Milliken, a Mifflin County native who will be wrestling for Trinity in Camp Hill; and Trent Hidlay who is the younger brother of Hayden Hidlay. Below is a complete list of the Pennsylvania wrestlers who will be competing in the 2014 FloNationals. I think PA gets four (4) wrestlers on the medal stand (Zacherl, Bulsak, Ems, Young/Hidlay).

Paul Dunn (Bethel Park)

Paul Dunn (Bethel Park)

An interesting group of wrestlers from PA make up the 145 lbs. bracket. Bethel Park junior Paul Dunn sprang onto the State Wrestling scene this season when he entered his first PIAA Class AAA State Tournament as the South West Region third place finisher. Dunn went an impressive (5-1) in the Tournament to finish in third place at 152 lbs. In the consolation finals Dunn defeated Altoona Area junior DJ Hollingshead who earned his first PIAA State Medal in his second try. Two PIAA Class AA State Medalist will be in position to earn medals as senior Brodie Zacherl (Brookville Area) and sophomore Nick Monico (Saegertown) join a talented list of PA wrestlers. Below is a look at all the Pennsylvania wrestlers who will be competing in the 2014 FloNationals. In my opinion PA may only see two (2) wrestlers make it onto the podium at 145 lbs.

Kyle Bova (Coudersport)

Kyle Bova (Coudersport)

Undefeated 2014 PIAA Class AA State Champion Kyle Bova (Coudersport) brings a career record of (141-12) into the 2014 FloNationals. Bova finished as the State runner-up in 2013 and captured the Championship this season at 160 lbs. 3x PIAA Class AA State Medalist Cole Walter (Mifflinburg Area) is a junior who is more than capable of earning a FloNationals medal at 152 lbs. Talented sophomore Noah Stewart (Mifflin County) was a 2014 PIAA Class AAA State qualifier and junior Brendan Burnham (Pine-Richland) was a 2013 PIAA Class AAA State seventh place medalist as a sophomore. Brookville Area junior Jimmy Miller has improved each season and was able to earn a PIAA Class AA State eighth place medal this season at 160 lbs. Pennsylvania youth stud Michael Beard is only an eighth grader but will be one to watch at 160 lbs. Below is a complete list of the Pennsylvania wrestlers who will be competing in the 2014 FloNationals at 152 lbs. Overall I think Pennsylvania will earn two (2) medals with Kyle Bova leading the way.

Ryan Preisch (Milton Area)

Ryan Preisch (Milton Area)

Lehigh recruit Ryan Preisch (Milton Area) is a 2x PIAA Class AA State third place medalist who will highlight a 160 lbs. bracket. Preisch was a 2013 FloNationals fourth place finisher at 152 lbs. Joining Preisch are two PIAA State Medalists in Blairsville’s 3x PIAA Class AA State medalist junior Drew Doak and Central Mountain senior Chad Reese. Keep an eye on Bangor’s sophomore Charles Sell who is up two weights from his 145 lbs. post-season weight and Penn Trafford junior Devin Austin who is a consistent wrestler who can keep it tight with almost any opponent. Below is a complete list of the Pennsylvania wrestler who will be competing in the 2014 FloNationals at 160 lbs. Overall I think Pennsylvania gets two medals here – Preisch and Doak.

Garrett Hoffman (Montoursville Area)

Garrett Hoffman (Montoursville Area)

One of the more impressive weights of the Tournament will be 170 lbs. where undefeated PIAA Class AA State Champion Even Delong (Kane Area) anchors the group. Delong, a Clarion recruit, earned his third straight PIAA State Medal after finishing as the runner-up last season. Speaking of runner-ups, South Fayette junior Jared Walker was a 2014 PIAA Class AA State runner-up at 160 lbs. a season after finishing in seventh place. Franklin’s super sophomore Dakota Geer was a 2014 170 lbs. PIAA Class AA State third place medalist in his first appearance at the State Tournament. Fellow sophomore wrestler Garrett Hoffman (Montoursville Area) also earned a PIAA State Medal in his first trip to Hershey finishing in sixth at 170 lbs. after being forced to injury default his final two matches of the Tournament. Keep an eye on Stroudsburg sophomore John Jackobson. Below is a complete list of the Pennsylvania wrestlers who will be competing in the 2014 FloNationals at 170 lbs. 182 lbs.

The slimmest group of Pennsylvania wrestler is at 182 lbs. Only one (1) PIAA State qualifier will be featured at 182 lbs. with Wallenpaupack Area junior Jared Wehrmann who ended his season with a (41-5) record. Northeast senior Kemran Fayikov had a solid season and could surprise the field. Below is a complete list of Pennsylvania wrestlers who will be competing in the 2014 FloNationals at 182 lbs. I think the Keystone State strikes out and fails to earn a medal at 182 lbs.

Tom Sleigh (DuBois Area)

Tom Sleigh (DuBois Area)

Two of the top 195 lbs. wrestlers in the State this season will highlight the PA field. 2x PIAA Class AAA State third place medalist Tom Sleigh (DuBois Area) qualified for the State Tournament all four seasons and will continue his career at Bucknell next season. Last season Sliegh finished with a sixth place medal at 170 lbs. in the 2013 FloNationals. He will be joined by 2014 PIAA Class AAA State fourth place medalist Drew Phipps (Norwin). The sophomore, who placed second at the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals last weekend, fell to Sleigh in the consolation finals by a score of (3-2). A trio of PIAA State Qualifiers will join these two with junior Matt Wagner (Delaware Valley), junior Garrett Reinwald (Fort LeBoeuf), and sophomore Zach Stafford (Cambridge Springs). Also keep an eye on Bishop McDevitt freshman Cole Nye who was a 2014 South East Regional sixth place finisher wrestling up at 220 lbs. Below is a complete list of the wrestlers who will be competing at the 2014 FloNationals at 195 lbs. Overall I think PA earns two (2) medals here (Sleigh, Phipps).

State Champion Mike Boykin (Coatsville Area)

State Champion Mike Boykin (Coatsville Area)

That Champ is here! Mike “Freight-Train” Boykin is arguably the top high school senior who has yet to make a decision for future plans. The undefeated 2014 PIAA Class AAA State Champion burst onto the National Wrestling scene after defeating superb sophomore Jordan Wood (Boyertown Area) in the Regional and State finals. Boykin is an exciting athlete who has a ton of potential. He isn’t the only PIAA State finalist on the list as West Bracnh’s junior Reynold “Buzzy” Maines is entered at 220 lbs. Maines was 2014 PIAA Class AA State runner-up falling to undefeated State Champion Jake Temple (Avella Area) for the second time in as many weeks. Fellow South West Regional wrestler Jacob Robb (Kittanning) was a PIAA Class AA fifth place medalist this season and the sophomore may surprise some wrestlers at the 2014 FloNationals. Keep an eye on Emmaus junior Thomas Alcro and Brookville Area sophomore Bryce Town. Below is a complete list of the Pennsylvania wrestlers who will be competing in the 2014 FloNatinals at 220 lbs.

Ryan Monk (Dallas)

Ryan Monk (Dallas)

A rather young group of wrestlers make up the heavyweight division with Southmoreland sophomore Jake Beistel leading the way. Beistel was a 2014 PIAA Class AA State fifth place medalist after qualifying for the State Tournament in his freshman season. Dallas junior Ryan Monk recently competed in the NHSCA Junior Nationals where he placed fourth.Monk was a 2014 PIAA Class AAA State sixth place medalist in his first career trip to Hershey. Redbank Valley senior Ben Carillo should hold his own and keep an eye on Norwin sophomore Hayden Rice. Below is a complete list of the Pennsylvania wrestlers who will be competing in the 2014 FloNationals at heavyweight. Wrapping up the Tournament I think Pennsylvania earns two (2) medals (Beistel, Monk) at 285 lbs.

*Late entry Scott Augustine (McDowell) will be heading to American University next season. The 2014 PIAA Class AAA State Medalist will be in the hunt for a medal at the 2014 FloNationals.
