PA Wins Team Title as NHSCA Freshman Nationals Conclude

With 262 Team points Pennslyvania won the NHSCA Freshman Nationals slipping by New Jersey. Despite only a limited field of Pennsylvania participants, the Keystone State had five (5) finalists and eleven (11) total medalists.

2014 PIAA Class AA State third place medalist Brian Courtney (Athens Area) advanced into the NHSCA National Finals where he fell in overtime (4-3 OT) to New Mexico’s Jose Tapia at 106 lbs. After falling to Courtney (5-2) in the Championship round Chambersburg Area freshman Aaron Rump rebounded to finish in fourth place at 106 lbs. PIAA Class AA State runner-up John Pipa (Bishop McDevitt) moved up to 113 lbs. for the Freshman Nationals where he placed in sixth place.
In a weight that included several Pennsylvania wrestlers Nazareth Area freshman Travis Stefanik was the only Keystone State grappler to come away with a medal at 126 lbs. finishing in fifth place. Fellow Nazareth Area Blue Eagle wrestler Brock Wilson advanced into the freshman National finals at 132 lbs. but fell in overtime (5-3 OT). Yet another District 11 freshman had an impressive Tournament as 2014 PIAA Class AA State seventh place medalist Mike Labriola (Bethlehem Catholic) finished in third place at 138 lbs.
The third finalist for Pennsylvania was Chambersburg Area freshman Drew Peck at 152 lbs. The 2014 South Central Regional sixth place medal winner finished as the freshman National runner-up falling in the finals (3-0). Canon-McMillan freshman Blaze Kansco placed sixth at 160 lbs. The first PA freshman National Champion came at 182 lbs. when Bishop McDevitt’s 2014 PIAA Class AA State qualifier Zane Black used a (4-2 OT) decision to win the title. Black’s teammate Cole Nye followed up with a finals appearance at 195 lbs. The South East Regional Class AA sixth place medalist finished as the runner-up falling in the freshman National finals (10-2). South Western freshman Seth Janney, a PIAA Class AAA South Central Regional fifth place medalist, competed at 220 lbs. where he finished in third place. Janney went (5-1) at the Freshman Nationals picking up all five wins by fall and falling (1-0) to the eventual Champion.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
