Elite 8 Champions Highlight PA’s Dominance at Super 32
The 2013 Super 32 was owned by Pennslyvania Wrestling. PA earned an amazing EIGHT Championship Belts in Greensboro, NC on Sunday. Overall PA had 14 total finalists with three weights, 120 lbs., 132 lbs., and 138 lbs., featuring all-Pennslyvania finals. In total Pennslyvania earned 28 medals despite several big-name wrestlers missing. Multiple wrestlers who were registered to compete at the Super 32 did not, such as State Champions Devin Brown, Solomon Chishko, Joe Galasso, and Thomas Haines.
PIAA Fourth Place Medalist Gage Curry (North Hills) advanced to the Super 32 Challenge Finals at 106 lbs. before falling to 2013 New York State Champion Yanni Diakomihalis (3-0). In the semifinals Curry advanced via injury default to PIAA Class AA State Runner-up Luke Karam (Bethlehem Catholic). Karam defaulted out of the tournament, finishing in sixth place, and was a Tournament favorite at 106 lbs. before sustaining an injury. Having an impressive performance was eighth grade wrestler Sammy Sasso (Nazareth Area) who was two wins from earning a medal. PIAA Class AA Fourth Place Medalist Jacob Wasser (Palisades) was also two wins from the medal stand and defeated freshman Cole Manley (Altoona Area) by a score of (1-0) along the way.
At 113 lbs. freshman Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) got long awaited revenge against the Nation’s #1 106 lbs. wrestler Nick Suriano (New Jersey). Suriano defeated Lee in the finals of the 2012 Super 32 at 106 lbs. (4-3) in a match that Lee appeared to be in control of. Suriano, a tenth grader this year, was ranked #1 at 106 lbs. throughout the season by several polls and continued that into this season at 113 lbs. In the re-match Lee was able to outlast Suriano in overtime (3-1) in OT by securing a winning take-down. “The Kid” will begin his high school career with high expectations as the Top Incoming Freshman of PA and one of the best 113 lbs. wrestlers in the Nation. Also placing at 113 lbs. was Pennsylvania native Eric Hong who is a freshman at Georgetown Prep in Maryland. Hong finished in Eighth Place and defeated Jefferson-Morgan’s junior PIAA State Qualifier Brandon Howard along the way. Spencer Lee’s teammate and fellow freshman Gus Solomon has an impressive tournament going (4-2) against the competition.
In a battle of 2013 PIAA State Champions sophomores Luke Pletcher and George “Mickey” Phillippi met in the 120 lbs. finals. Pletcher entered the Super 32 already possessing two High School Division Medals as he placed fourth as an eighth grader and third last season as a freshman both at 106 lbs. Moving up two weight-classes Pletcher did not seem to be affected by the change in weight as he claimed his first Super 32 Belt. Returning PIAA State Medal Winners Michael Marino, Tyrone Kump, and Jake Gromacki all came very close to earning medals. Hempfield Area’s Ricky Cavallo wrestled well and came within two wins from earning a spot on the medal stand. In the consolation round Gromacki major decisioned former PIAA State Medalist Danny Martoccio (Council Rock South) by a score of (9-1). Klump defeated Marino (4-3) also in the consolation round.
A surprise finalist to many wrestling fans was North Allegheny’s Dom Forys at 126 lbs. In the semifinals Forys defeated one of the Nation’s top wrestlers, Tommy Thorn of Minnesota, by a score of (6-3) to advance to the Championship finals at 126 lbs. In the finals he met Georgia’s dominant wrestler Ryan Millhof (Collins Hill) falling to the senior (3-0). Forys proved he is a serious contender for a PIAA State Championship after finishing in fifth and third place in his last two trips to Hershey. Two-time PIAA Class AA State runner-up Zeke Moisey fell to Millhof (3-1 in OT) in the Championship semifinals and the Bethlehem Catholic senior dropped his consolation finals match to Tommy Thorn (5-4) to finish in fourth place at 126 lbs. Juniors A.C. Headlee (Waynesburg Central) and Korbin Myers (Boiling Springs) both came within two wins of the medal stand as did Kiski Prep senior Justin Patrick (formerly of Ligonier Valley) at 126 lbs.
In the second “All PA” finals, juniors Sammy Krivus and Michael Kemerer met in the finals at 132 lbs. The WPIAL stars have met multiple times in their wrestling careers and the competition is always tight between these two friends. Krivus (Hempfield Area) was a 2013 PIAA State Champion at 120 lbs. and was a 2012 PIAA State Third Place Medalist at 113 lbs. Franklin Regional’s Michael Kemerer is no stranger to the big stage in Hershey as he has finished as the PIAA State Runner-up twice in his first two seasons. As expected the bout was very close in the Super 32 Finals as Krivus was able to squeak by Kemerer (2-1) to his second straight Super 32 Challenge Belt. Nazareth Area senior Chase Zemenak had a very impressive tournament finishing in Fifth Place at 132 lbs. The two-time PIAA State Medalist defeated 2013 PIAA State Qualifier Hayden Hidlay (Mifflin County) by a score of (2-0) before falling to Kemerer (6-2) in the Championship Semifinals. Freshman Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford) showed why he is considered to be on the the Top Incoming Freshmen of 2014 when he downed Hidlay (10-3) and just nearly missed a spot on the medal stand falling one match short (5-3 in OT). It was a major turn around for Coy as he lost to Hidlay by major decision (10-0) in the PAWF State Finals at 126 lbs. in June 2013.
Just like 132 lbs. it was an “All PA” finals at 138 lbs. as seniors Brock Zacherl (Brookville Area) took on Jason Nolf (Kittaning). Jason Nolf is a 2x PIAA Class AA State Champion who only has one defeat in his entire career and will take his talents to Penn State next year. Nolf finished in third place at the 2012 Super 32 at 132 lbs. Zacherl is a 2x PIAA Class AA State Medalist finishing in fourth place at the 2013 State Tournament. Zacherl will be heading to Clarion next season. In the Championship semifinals Zacherl defeated 2013 PIAA State Runner-up Patrick Duggan (Cumberland Valley) by a score of (7-2). Duggan bounced back and went on to finish in third place. Just as he has done his entire career, Nolf continued to dominate his opponents, picking up 3 falls, 2 major decisions and a (7-0) regular decision. In the finals against Zacherl, Nolf racked up 17 points en route to a (17-7) major decision. Returning PIAA State Medalists Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs), Josh Maruca (Franklin Regional), and Jacob Wentzel (South Park) each went (4-2) and narrowly missed earning medals.
There was only one weight-class that did not see at least one Pennsylvania wrestler on the medal stand and 145 lbs. was that weight. 2013 PIAA State Medalist Billy Barnes (Williamson) fell just one victory from placing at the Super 32 Challenge.
At 152 lbs. current Kiski Prep senior and former Burrell wrestler Zach Kelly advanced into the finals after defeating Nationally acclaimed junior Fox Baldwin, a Florida State Champion, by a score of (11-8). In the finals Kelly, a PIAA State Qualifier and 2x National Prep Medalist, fell (4-3) in the Super 32 Finals to Ohio State Champion Jacob Danishek. It was an improvement for Kelly who finished in sixth place at the 2012 Super 32 Challenge at 145 lbs.
PA’s dominance continued as Central Dauphin senior Garrett Peppelman claimed his first career Super 32 Challenge Championship belt after finishing in sixth place last season. The 2012 PIAA State Champion won (5-2) in the finals over Jonathan Schleifer of New Jersey who was a State Runner-up in 2013. Peppelman is looking for his second career PIAA State Championship this season after running into Chance Marsteller last season. Fellow PA wrestler Bobby Fehr (Northampton Area) performed well advancing into the semifinals and finished in sixth place.
It was no surprise when Chance Marsteller cruised to his second career Super 32 Challenge Belt. Competing at 170 lbs. the Nation’s #1 wrestler was dominate against the field and defeated Georgia State Champion Taylor Lujan (9-3) in the finals.
In arguably PA’s most impressive performance, the Keystone State earned four medals, including the Champion Zack Zavatsky (Greater Latrobe) at 182 lbs. Zavatsky defeated PIAA State Medalist Tom Sleigh (DuBois Area) in the semifinals (5-2) to advance into the finals. Zavatsky earned the Super 32 Challenge Belt over Nicky Hall, a New York Native who wrestlers for Wyoming Seminary in PA, by a score of (5-2). In the consolation bracket it was a battle for Third Place by PA wrestlers. In the end it was PIAA State Medalist Stephen Loiseau (Lancaster Catholic) who clawed to finish in third place. He defeated fellow District 3 wrestler Tristan Sponseller (Bermudian Spring) by a score of (7-1) and then followed it up by taking down Sleigh (3-2). Sponseller, who was a 2013 PIAA State Runner-up, went on to finish in Seventh Place while Tom Sleigh finished in Fifth Place.
At 195 lbs. WPIAL sophomores Drew Phipps (Norwin) and Tyler Worthing (Kiski Area) battled it out for Third Place with Worthing coming out on top (4-3). Phipps was a PIAA State Qualifier in 2013 while Worthing was a 31 match winner in his freshman season for the Cavilers. It was a major victory for Worthing who will look to not only qualify for the his first State Tournament this season but earn a medal.
Sophomore sensation Jordan Wood (Boyertown Area) proved why he is a series threat to Thomas Haines (Solanco) at 220 lbs. Wood captured the Super 32 Challenge Belt after finishing in fourth place last season. Wood was dominate with his closest match being a (6-3) victory. In the finals Wood major decisioned Massachusetts State Champion Ian Butterbrodt (11-0). Two other Pennslyvania wrestlers earned medals at 220 lbs. as Jake Gunning (Bethlehem Liberty) finished in fifth place while Antonio Pelusi (LaSalle College) ended in eighth place. Gunning defeated Pelusi (8-2) while Pelusi downed Penn Cambria’s Seth McLendon (2-1). Overall it was a impressive performance for the PA upper-weights.
At 285 lbs. Bethlehem Catholic’s Andrew Dunn continued his success by finishing in Fourth Place at the Super 32 Challenge. Dunn placed in Sixth Place at the PIAA Class AA State Championships last season as a sophomore. Dunn will be looking to improve on that performance this season.
