Super 32 Challenge: Pennsylvania Preview
The 2013 Super 32 Challenge is going to be yet another entertaining two days of the Nation’s top wrestlers in the premier Pre-Season Tournament. Below is a look at the PA Wrestlers who will make the trip to Greensboro, NC.
At 106 lbs. 2012 PIAA Class AA State Champion Devin Brown, now at Franklin Regional High School, headlines a group of talented wrestlers. Brown met BECA’s Luke Karam in the 2013 State Finals and defeated the freshman in overtime by virtue of a fall. Karam, now a sophomore, will also compete in the Super 32 at 106 lbs. and both he and Brown will be contenders for the Super 32 Challenge Belt. PIAA Class AAA State Medalist Gage Curry will look to continue his pre-season success as the sophomore recently won the Iron Horse Invitational. Some new faces will be making their high school wrestling debuts in Greensboro with freshman Dan Moran (Northampton Area), Austin DeSanto (Exeter Township), Cole Manley (Altoona Area), and John Pipa (Bishop McDevitt) all competing at 106 lbs. Muncy’s Angelo Barberio and 2013 PIAA State Medalist Jacob Wasser (Palisades) are two sophomores who could reach the medal stand. Outstanding eighth grade wrestler Sam Sasso (Nazareth Area) may surprise the field after capturing the Super 32 Qualifying Tournament Championship last month.

The PA field at 113 lbs. will feature Top Incoming Freshman Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) who was the Super 32 Challenge Runner-up in 2012 at 106 lbs. Several talented wrestlers will join Lee with PIAA State Medalists Dylan Chatterton (Central York), Willis Gruver (Redbank Valley), and TyShawn White (Central Dauphin) all competing at 113 lbs. National Prep Runner-up Ethan McCoy (Greater Latrobe) was at Kiski Prep his freshman season and will certainly make an impact in the PIAA. Former PA Youth wrestler Eric Hong (Georgetown Prep, MD) may not be competing in PA but he should have a good tournament. An Upper Darby trio of brother Austin and Anthony Petril and freshman Colin Cronin will all compete in the weight-class.

Medalist Contenders: Ethan McCoy; Dylan Chatterton; Willis Gruver; Brendan Howard
Surprise Performance: Gus Solomon
The 120 lbs. weight-class is loaded with talent from the Keystone State as returning PIAA State Champions Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) and George “Mickey” Phillippi will look to earn a Super 32 Challenge Belt. Pletcher was a 2012 Super 32 Challenge third place finisher at 106 lbs. Multiple time PIAA State Medalist and 2012 Super 32 eighth place finisher Jake Gromacki (Erie Cathedral Prep) will look to compete for another Super 32 medal. A variety of PIAA State medalist including Tyrone Klump (Nazareth Area), Triston Law (Forest Hills), Michael Marino (Garnet Valley), and Dan Martoccio (Council Rock South) all have chances of earning medals in Greensboro. Rookies Todd Lane (Southern Columbia Area) and Zack Trampe (Council Rock South) could also pose a threat.

PIAA State Tournament Runner-ups Zeke Moisey and Dalton Macri each are registered to compete at 126 lbs. and both are searching for a second Super 32 medal. WPIAL stars and returning PIAA State Medalists A.C. Headlee (Waynesburg Central) and Dom Forys (North Allegheny) will both compete at 126 lbs. with Headlee looking to repeat as a Super 32 Challenge medalist. Making the jump up two weight-classes is former PIAA State runner-up Korbin Myers (Boiling Springs). Two-time PIAA State Medalist Justin Patrick is now at Kiski Prep and could land on the medal stand. There are a multitude of other PA wrestlers who should compete including Logan Heinl, Stephen Maloney, John Lobeck, and Sam Butler.
