In his sophomore season at William Penn Burgey again competed at 149 lbs. but this time he ended on top capturing the NAIA National Championship at 149 lbs. winning five bouts in a row.

After transferring to wrestling power-house Notre Dame College, which made the jump from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 2012, the junior also moved up in weight to 174 lbs.
