February 27th: State and Regional Rankings Updated

The PIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament will take place for the 76th year next week as the 2013 Season comes to a close. Already the scene has begun to set as the South Central Regional Class AAA Tournament concluded last weekend and for the first time will be sending 4 representatives to the State Tournament.

This weekend the remaining four Class AAA Regionals will take place in addition to all four Class AA Regionals. Thus far there have been minimal upsets to speak about but I expect that to change following this weekends action. Freshman Jordan Wood (Boyertown Area) is entering his first South East Regional Tournament at 220 lbs. with an impressive (40-1) record that has earned him a #2 ranking in the State. Senior Austin Matthews (Reynolds) will be competing for his fourth straight North West Regional Class AA Championship and is currently ranked #1 in the State at 152 lbs. Former State Champion Jason Nolf (Kittanning) will most likely have to face Keystone Oak’s senior and returning State runner-up Nick Zanetta for the third straight week in a row for his third straight South West Regional Championship; the two are ranked #1 and #2 respectively in the State at 132 lbs.
