40 schools from across Pennsylvania will be competing in the 2013 PIAA State Dual Team Championships that begin on Monday February 4th with the Preliminary Round in both Class AA and AAA. There were some surprising outcomes and predictable victories in several Districts and overall should be yet another exciting State Dual Team Tournament.
In District 3 State Powerhouse Central Dauphin won it’s sixth straight Class AAA Championship title on Saturday by defeating Chambersburg Area (50-6). The Rams will face the winner of the North Allegheny vs. Taylor Allderdice preliminary round match. Central Dauphin will look to improve on their State third place finish from last season in which they lost to eventual State Champion Canon-McMillan in the semi-final round. This post-season Central Dauphin and Canon-McMillan are on opposite sides of the bracket and seem to be on a collision course for the finals. Neither team is a lock for the finals as both programs faced close calls in their respective District Tournaments. Central Dauphin defeated previously unbeaten Spring Grove Area (33-26) in the semi-finals in the Ram’s closest match since that semi-final defeat to Canon-McMillan. The Canon-McMillan Big Macs had difficulties of their own en route to their recording setting fourth straight WPIAL Team Championship Title. In the WPIAL finals it came down to the final match which junior Dalton Macri (Canon-McMillan) secured the match victory with a fall over Dan Turner (Franklin Regional) at 120 lbs. Macri’s victory lifted Canon-McMillan to a (31-26) victory over Franklin Regional in an exciting match between two top programs.
Last seasons PIAA State Dual Team runner-up Erie McDowell captured the District 10 Championship over General McLane on Saturday. McDowell is riding a surge of momentum into this years Dual Team Championships and District 1 runner-up Downingtown East in the first round on Thursday. In a rematch of a previously close contested match Easton Area once again narrowly defeated Parkland (28-26) in the District 11 finals on Saturday. Easton will face District 9 Champions DuBois Area in the first round and the Red Rovers may have the easiest route to the Championship Semi-Finals.
In Class AA the most exciting District finals occurred when District 3 powers Boiling Springs and Bermudian Springs did battle on Saturday. After 14 bouts the match was deadlocked (31-31) but based on criteria D, most matches won, gave Boiling Springs the one point victory over their rivals Bermudian Springs. The Bubblers will face the winner of DIstrict 9 runner-up Brookville Area and District 10 third place finisher Saegertown. In District 11 returning PIAA State Dual Team Champions Bethlehem Catholic rolled to victory over Saucon Valley (53-9) and will begin their journey for a third straight State title against District 1 Champions Lower Moreland in the first round. Bethlehem Catholic is the favorite in Class AA but will have to face tough competition along the way.
Central Columbia captured the District 4 Dual Team Championship be defeating Benton Area in the finals of a very competitive District Tournament. In the District 4 consolation finals Hughesville defeated Mucny to earn a spot in the PIAA Dual Team Championship. District 10 powerhouse Reynolds defeated their rivals Fort LeBoeuf (28-24) in an exciting bout of two of the State’s top teams.
Other Class AA District Champions included Western Wayne (District 2), Chestnut Ridge (District 5), West Branch (District 6), Burrell (District 7), and Redbank Valley (District 9).
