Top Wrestlers Matthews and Solomon Make Commitment

Two of Pennsylvania’s top wrestlers made college commitments recently including 195 lbs. 2012 PIAA State AA Champion Ryan Solomon of Milton Area. Solomon has been on the State wrestling stage the past three seasons earning a sixth place medal as a freshman, a State runner-up as a sophomore and his first State Championship as a junior. The Milton senior has decided to continue his wrestling career at Pittsburgh, joining a team with a strong history of upper-weight wrestlers. This past summer Ryan captured a National title when he won the Junior National Freestyle Championship at 195 lbs. in Fargo, ND. Solomon is the favorite to repeat as the 195 lbs. weight-class in 2013 and projects to compete at 197 lbs. at Pitt in the future.

Also making a commitment was Reynold’s wrestling star Austin Matthews who committed to Clarion. The senior has twice earned runner-up honors at the PIAA State AA Tournament, falling (11-8) in the 2012 State finals at 138 lbs. to 2x State Champion Mikey Racciato. As a sophomore Matthews lost (8-0) to Derry Area’s Travis Shaffer in the finals at 140 lbs. As a freshman Matthews was a State eighth place finisher. In 2011 Austin was a runner-up at 138 lbs. in both the Super 32 Challenge and Walsh Ironman Tournament proving his National worth. As a senior for Reynolds, Matthews will battle for an elusive State Championship, and his fourth PIAA State Tournament medal. Austin should fall into the 141 lbs. range for the Clarion Golden Eagles.

Also making a commitment recently was Easton Area’s Tyler Greene. The Red Rover senior was a PIAA State AAA medal winner last season finishing seventh at 182 lbs. Greene will continue his wrestling and education at Bucknell University. Greene figure to fit into the 184 lbs. range for the Bison.
