2013 Top Returners: Class AA

Although still roughly four months until high schools across Pennsylvania begin official practices in their wrestling rooms it is never to early to examine the top returners from the 2011-2012 season. The Class AAA Top Returners were released on June 1st and now it is Class AA’s turn. The Top 25 returners in the State and Top 12 returners in each region have been ranked for all 14 weight-classes.

The Class AA Top Returners are headlined by returning 2x State Champion Mikey Racciato from District 11’s Pen Agryl Area and 2012 PIAA State Champion and 2x West Virginia State Champion Ryan Diehl from District 3’s Trinity. Additionally, 4  previous State Champions will be seeking their second title in 2013. Those wrestlers include 2012 106 lbs. State Champion and 2011 State 3rd Darian Cruz of District 11’s Bethlehem Catholic, 2012 State Champion at 195 lbs. and 3x medal winner Ryan Solomon from District 4’s Milton Area, and 2012 State Champion at 285 lbs. Nazar Mironenko from District 4’s Mifflinburg Area. Returning to the mat for his senior season is 2010 State Champion Zain Retherford now at Benton Area. Retherford won the 103 lbs. Championship in 2010, was a 3rd place finisher in 2011, and was ruled ineligible for the 2012 season due to his transfer from Line Mountain to Benton Area.

Those returning State Champions will be joined by several 3x State medal winners seeking their first State Championship during their senior season. Those include Dakota Deslauriers from District 7’s Burrell who was a State runner-up last season at 182 lbs. with previous finishes of 3rd and 6th at the State Tournament; Peter Renda from District 3’s Brandywine Heights who was a State runner-up in 2012 at 152 lbs. with previous finishes of 5th and 7th at the State Tournament; Austin Matthews from District 10’s Reynolds who was a State runner-up in both 2012 and 2011 while finishing 8th as a freshman in 2010; and Colt Cotten from District 4’s Benton Area who finished 4th in both 2012 and 2011 while finishing 5th as a freshman in 2010.

On a State level Class AA has a strong composition of returning wrestlers, many with medals and previous trips to Hershey, across all 14 weight classes. For example both the 106 lbs. and 285 lbs. State Champions from 2012 will be defending their titles in 2013. On a regional level Class AA lacks depth of talent, as predicted, due to the simple fact their % of male students is significantly less than Class AAA schools.
