New PIAA School Classes
The PIAA recently released their new school classifications for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 athletic seasons. In total there will be 493 wrestling programs across the State, an increase of two from the previous two year cycle. As expected there have been a few changes with the anticipated male enrollment of several school districts fluctuating from year to year. For example, District 6’s Westmont Hilltop, which has bounced back and fourth from AA to AAA will be competing in the AA level this cycle. In District 3, Middletown Area High School will be competing at the AA level. Middletown is normally classified as an AA sized school but has always elected to upgrade to the AAA level.
Both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh city high schools have faced school closings/consolidations recently or upcoming. District 12 (City of Philadelphia) faced the most changes with schools such as Monsignor Bonner closing next year, and Overbrook High School adding wrestling to it’s athletic program. District 8 (City of Pittsburgh) will not have any programs competing at the AA level with both Oliver High School and Langley High School closing.
