PA Results at Super 32

The Super 32 is always a good indicator of the depth and talent of PA wrestling. This year was no different. PA sent some of its top wrestlers to Greensboro, N.C to do battle with the biggest names in the Nation. Below is a complete list of every PA wrestler that competed in the Super 32, along with their tournament record and place.

 

Super 32 PA Awards:

Outstanding Wrestler:  No question here. Chance Marsteller continues to dominate anyone who steps on the mat with the Kennard-Dale grappler. Marsteller had no trouble getting to the finals at 160 lbs. before defeating 3x-Virginia State Champion Cody Allala (5-2).

Outstanding Freshman:  PA wrestling fans will be hearing this name for the next four years: Michael Kemerer. The Franklin Regional frosh added to his PJW State Championship with his first Super 32 Challenge Belt at 106 lbs. In the semifinals Kemerer needed ultimate tiebreaker to defeat fellow WPIAL star and 8th, yes I said 8th grader, Luke Pletecher of Greater Latrobe (1-0). Kemerer went on to win a very close finals match against fellow freshman Matthew Kolodzik of Ohio (3-2).

Biggest Losing Surprise:  A year after winning his first Super 32 Challenge Belt at 135 lbs. Erie McDowell senior and previous PA State Champion Steve Spearman failed to place this year at the Super 32. Competing at 138 lbs., Spearman lost a close match to a geographically close opponent, falling to junior Austin Matthews of Reynolds (6-5) in the quarterfinals. Spearman fell to the consolation round and ran into a familiar foe and recent Iowa Hawkeye recruit Nate Skonieczny of Walsh Jesuit, Ohio. Spearman lost a close decision (2-1) to finish the tournament with a (4-2) record.

Biggest Winning Surprise:  Bryce Killian has never qualified for the PA State Tournament, but the Middletown junior does have a Super 32 medal following his 6th place finish this past weekend at 120 lbs.. Killian arrived in the championship semifinals surprisingly easily, with a fall, two major decisions, and a regular decision. Killian fell to eventual Super 32 Champion Ryan Diehl in the semis (9-0). In the consolation round, the Middletown Blue Raider needed overtime to defeat fellow PA wrestler Vito Pasone of E.L. Meyers senior (6-4). Killian went on to finish 6th.
