5 Pennsylvania Wrestlers Claim Beast of The East Championships; 33 Medal
Pennsylvania wrestlers fared well in one of the toughest Tournaments in the Nation. The University of Delaware played host to the Beast of The East in the 23rd Annual event with a total of five Pennsylvania programs finishing in the Top 10 in team scores. Leading the way was #1 Bethlehem Catholic with 146.5 points behind New Jersey’s Blair Academy and Bergen Catholic.
At 106 lbs. four Pennsylvania wrestlers ended on the podium with #7 Zach Glenn leading the way finishing fifth. The three additional medalists were all featured on PA Power Wrestling’s “Top Incoming Freshmen” report. The State’s #1 ranked wrestler at 113 lbs., Jakob Campbell (Boyertown Area) advanced into the finals after upsetting the #1 seed but fell in the finals to Delbarton’s Patrick Glory to finish second. Returning PIAA State Champion #2 Tyson Klump (Nazareth Area) finished in seventh while #3 Matty Parker (Pennridge) had an impressive run to place in third.
The first Pennsylvania Champion came at 120 lbs. with Central Dauphin senior #3 Tyshawn White who dominated the #1 seed Gerald Angelo (Bergen Catholic, NJ). White was able to get his offense going and racked up points to earn a major decision (10-2) to capture his first Beast of The East Championship. Also finishing on the podium at 120 lbs. was PA’s Top Incoming Freshman Julian Chelebove (Northampton Area) who placed seventh.
Five Keystone State wrestlers were featured on the 126 lbs. podium as #1 Luke Karam (Bethlehem Catholic) lead the group by finishing second. The 2x PIAA State Champion faced Bergen Catholic senior and Penn State recruit Nick Suriano in a rematch of the Super 32 Challenge Finals. The pair are ranked #1 and #2 in the Nation by Intrmat and in their Super 32 meeting Suriano was victorious (5-1). This time Suriano wasted no time gathering a takedown and taking Karam to his back picking up the fall in (1:50). Malvern Prep’s 3x National Prep Medalist Nick Lattanze finished in third defeating former PIAA State Finalist #3 Dan Moran (Northampton Area) in the consolation finals (1-0). Garnet Valley’s Matt Marino earned his second Beast of The East medal finishing fifth over PIAA State Medalist #5 Andrew Wert (Central Dauphin) in overtime (2-1 SV).
Two Mid-Penn Conference wrestlers medaled at 132 lbs. with juniors #10 Wyatt Long (Cumberland Valley) finishing in third by defeating Chambersburg Area’s Aaron Rump in the consolation finals (4-1). For the second week in a row Nazareth Area sophomore Sammy Sasso dazzled the crowd but this time he came out on top and captured the Beast of The East Championship a year after placing fifth. Teammate Brock Wilson (Nazareth Area) followed up Sasso’s performance by finishing fourth at 145 lbs.
The third Pennsylvania wrestler to claim gold was Kiski Prep junior Eric Hong who claimed the 152 lbs. Championship. The former 5x PJW State Champion clawed his way to the Championship beating the #16, #9, #4, and #3 seeds along the way. Nazareth Area kept rolling as #5 Travis Stefanik made his season debut down at 160 lbs. where he finished in third place. PIAA State Medalist #2 Mikey Labriola (Bethlehem Catholic) was a week removed from a King Of The Mountain Championship and earned a #3 seed at 170 lbs. In the semifinals Labriola downed the #2 seed (5-3) setting up a finals match with the #1 seed Brandon Dallavia (Blair Academy) ranked #3 in the Nation by Intermat. Labriola was unable to pull the upset falling (6-3). Cumberland Valley senior #15 Trent Cook wrestled to his seed by placing eighth at 170 lbs. in his first appearance at 170 lbs. In the quarterfinals Cook nearly took down #1 seed Dallavia but fell (4-3).
The weight with the most Pennsylvania flavor cam at 182 lbs. where six of eight medalists were all Keystone State grapplers. #3 Kyle Genitle (Pennridge) dropped to 182 lbs. and made a strong case for a #1 State Ranking by capturing the Beast of The East Championship over a formidable opponent. Gentile, a PIAA State Medalist and Lehigh recruit, cruised into the Championship finals from the second seed position picking up two major decisions and two falls en route to the finals. In the semifinals Gentile pinned PIAA State Medalist #1 Josh Colello (Cedar Cliff) in (1:05). Colello was forced to default out of the Tournament finishing in sixth place. Fellow District 3 star #8 Drew Peck (Chambersburg Area) finished in fifth place while PIAA State Medalist #6 Gregg Harvey Jr. (Boyertown Area) ended in fourth place. Rounding out the group was Waynesburg Central’s Collin McCracken who placed eighth.
Malvern Prep senior and former Norristown Area wrestler Rashon Lusane was the lone PA medalist at 195 lbs. finishing in fourth place, a spot above his #5 seed. The second most anticipated match-up of the Tournament came at 220 lbs. when PIAA State Champion and former Cadet World Silver Medalist Joran Wood (Boyertown Area) who was in search of his second career Beast of The East Championship. Ranked #2 in the Nation at 220 lbs. by Intermat Wood faced off with Holy Cross, NJ senior Matt Correnti who entered ranked number five in the Nation by Intermat. The Boyertown Bear was unable to capture his second Championship falling (6-5) to Correnti. After an impressive King Of The Mountain Championship a week earlier heavyweight #6 Niko Camacho (Bethlehem Catholic) fought his way back to finish in third place despite being the 11th seed. Camacho defeated former PIAA State Runner-up and current Malvern Prep wrestler Seth Janney who bumped up to heavyweight for the Beast. Boyertown Area senior Tommy Killoran wrestled to his seed finishing in fifth place.
