Pennsylvania Advances 15 into Super 32 Quarterfinals

GREENSBORO, NC – Overwhelming. That is the word I heard most college coaches describe trying to follow along with the action from the Super 32. That is because the level of talent here is so high that wrestlers are constantly being tested, early and often.

Pennsylvania wrestlers had their share of ups and downs on Saturday.

Overall, 15 wrestlers find themselves in the Championship Quarterfinals with a chance to secure a spot in the top eight on Sunday morning. Leading the way are 2017 PIAA State Champions Trent Hidlay (Mifflin County), Julian Chlebove (Northampton), and Cody Mulligan (Saegertown).

Hidlay will take on 2x PIAA State finalist Robert Patrick (Ligonier Valley) in the quarters, as Hidlay is looking to improve on a third-place finish from last year. 2x PIAA State Champion Julian Chlebove moved up to 132 lbs. and had to fight his way to wins on Saturday. He will have a tough task on Sunday with Jesse Vasquez of California. Vasquez is ranked #7 in the nation by Flo at 132 lbs. and was an Ironman runner-up. Cody Mulligan will face PIAA State finalist Dalton Group (Susquenita) in the quarterfinals at 182 lbs. in yet another PA on PA match-up. Group was able to get past Julian Gorring (Fort LeBoeuf) in the Round of 16 with a (4-2) decision. Pennsylvania will have half of all the 182 lbs. quarterfinalists, as PIAA State finalist Josh Stillings (Pennridge) and Darien Roberts (Wyoming Seminary) join Group and Mulligan.

At 126 lbs., sophomores Beau Bartlett (Wyoming Seminary) and Sam Hillegas (North Hills) each are a win away from their first Super 32 High School Division medal finish. Bartlett, ranked #9 in the nation by Flo, takes on Aaron Schulist of Wisconsin, who enters ranked #20 in the nation by Flo. Hillegas, an undefeated PIAA State Champion last season, is unranked in the nation but will have a chance to prove his worth on Sunday morning against #16 Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio.

Three wrestlers at 138 lbs. are one win away from the Super 32 Semifinals, with junior Ryan Vulakh (Pope John) hoping to earn his second straight Super 32 medal. The #7 ranked wrestler in the nation by Flo, Vulakh was fifth in Greensboro a season ago and will meet the #10 ranked wrestler Marshal Keller (Virginia) in the quarters. BECAHI junior and PIAA State Medalist Ryan Anderson is up from 132 lbs., where he holds a #6 national ranking by Flo, but finds himself in the quarters.

Former Super 32 finalist JoJo Aragona (Pope John), who attends high school in New Jersey but is a Milford, PA native, will have his hands full in the quarterfinals with the #2 ranked wrestler in the nation by Flo, Mitch Moore (Ohio). Aragona comes in ranked #14 nationally by Flo at 132 lbs.

The talk of the town was no doubt Thayne Lawrence (Frazier), who took out top-seeded and the Nation’s #2 ranked wrestler by Flo Alex Lloyd (Minnesota) at 145 lbs. The sophomore, who finished third in the 2017 PIAA State Tournament, finds himself in the Super 32 quarterfinals against senior Mason Phillips (Washington). Phillips is ranked #8 nationally by Flo and was a Fargo Runner-up in July.

At 195 lbs., recent American commit Blake Barrick (Big Spring) defeated Kansas junior Wyatt Hendrickson, who was third at Fargo and ranked #19 in the nation by Flo, in the Round of 16 to advance into the quarterfinals. He will now face Lucas Davison (Indiana) who was third at the Super 32 last season and is ranked #6 nationally by Flo.
