PA Crowns Two UWW Junior National Freestyle Champions

Franklin Regional High School had a good day on Saturday in Las Vegas, NV as both current and former Panther Wrestlers grabbed UWW Junior National Freestyle Championships. High school junior Spencer Lee and college red-shirt freshman Michael Kemerer each earned their “Stop Signs” at 50 KG and 70 KG respectively.

For Spencer Lee it was his first Junior National Championship despite already owning a UWW Junior World Championship. The 2015 World Champion returned to 50 KG / 110.25 lbs. where he destroyed his opponents. Truly astonishing is the fact that Spencer Lee only spent a total of (1:16) on the mat in his three matches. “The Kid” picked up three tech-fall victories in the first period and hardly broke a sweat en route to the Championship. In the finals Lee defeated Minnesota State Champion Patrick McKee (10-0 T-Fall). Spencer, a recent commit to the Iowa Hawkeyes, now is an automatic finalist for the UWW Junior World Team Trials which are held in Irving, Texas on May 20-22.

Lee’s former and future teammate Michael Kemerer (Franklin Regional / Iowa) had an impressive showing at 70 KG / 154.25 lbs. winning the Championship with five straight victories. In the finals Kemerer faced high school senior Evan Wick (San Marino, CA) who last season was a Fargo Junior National Runner-up and will be heading to the University of Wisconsin next season with his twin brother Zander. En route to the finals Kemerer, a 4x PIAA State Finalist and 1x State Champion, picked up three straight tech-falls and pin in four matches. In the finals he and Wick battled neck and neck with Kemerer coming away with a narrow (9-8) decision and his first Junior National Championship.

In total Pennsylvania saw 23 wrestlers compete in Freestyle with 7 coming away finishing in the Top 8. High school sophomore and 2x undefeated State Champion Gavin Teasdale (Jefferson Morgan) showcased his Freestyle skills at 55 KG / 121.25 lbs. finishing as the runner-up. Teasdale, who won his second State Title in March at 113 lbs., stated in his verbal commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes that he wanted to get bigger and stronger for College. Clearly the increase is working well for Gavin who took down several high profile wrestlers en route to the finals. In the semis Teasdale faced Oklahoma State University red-shirt freshman Nick Piccininni, a 4x New York State Champion in high school, and had no issues in a (10-0) Tech-Fall. With the victory Gavin faced one of the most recognizable names in the Wrestling Nation – Daton Fix of Sand Springs High School in Oklahoma. Last year at the UWW Cadet World Team Trials Daton Fix sent shock waves through the Wrestling Community when he defeated Spencer Lee in two straight matches to clinch a spot on the Cadet World Team. In 2016 Daton won his third straight Oklahoma State Championship to remain undefeated in his high school career. Although many fans wanted to see a Spencer Lee – Daton Fix re-match in 2016 a Teasdale – Fix match-up was quite entertaining. When the dust settled Fix came away with a (6-5) win over Teasdale.

At 60 KG / 132.25 lbs. former PIAA State Runner-up and Lehigh University sophomore Scotty Parker (Pennridge / Lehigh) advanced into the Championship semifinals when top seed Yianni Diakomihalis (New York) fell in the quarterfinals. Parker lost to eventual Champion Mitch McKee (Minnesota) by tech-fall (15-4). After the defeat Scott injury-defaulted in the consolations to end up in sixth place.

2x PIAA State Champion and Penn State red-shirt freshman Vincenzo Joseph (Central Catholic / Penn State) continued to prove why next season he should be considered a threat to the top NCAA wrestlers. Competing at 74 KG / 163 lbs. Joseph had a solid performance against a strong field. After two straight tech-fall victories Vincenzo took on fellow PA wrestler and former PIAA State Champion Cole Walter (Mifflinburg Area / Lehigh) and picked up a (15-4) tech-fall. In the quarterfinals Joseph faced Oklahoma State true-freshman Joe Smith who in March was a NCAA All-American for the Cowboys. In a highly competitive bout Joseph came away with a fall in (4:08) to advance into the semifinals where he faced his future Nittany Lion teammate Mark Hall III. A UWW World Champion Mark Hall is one of the best wrestlers in the Nation regardless of age and will be joining Joseph in Happy Valley in the fall. The two scraped to a (8-4) score that saw Mark Hall come out on top. Interestingly enough in 2015 at the UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals Mark Hall defeated PA’s Jason Nolf (Kittanning / Penn State) who of course was an NCAA Runner-up for Penn State in 2016. ‘Cenzo did not let the defeat affect him as he stormed back to finish third defeating Arizona State red-shirt freshman Anthony Valencia by fall in (1:02).

The two final medalists from Pennsylvania came at 120 KG / 264.5 lbs. as 2016 NCAA National Qualifier Joey Goodhart (Hempfield / Drexel) and Jake Gunning (Liberty / Buffalo) both finished in the Top 8. Goodhart went (6-1) to finish in third place. After falling in the quarterfinals to Youssif Hemida Goodhart battled back to the consolation finals where he avenged the defeat and won (8-3) over Hmida. Buffalo wrestler Jake Gunning (Liberty) was the top seed but fell twice to finish in fifth place.
