MAWA Blue Defeats Young Guns Black in Disney Duals Finals

Two Pennslyvania Teams did battle in the Disney Duals District All-Stars finals as Young Guns Black and MAWA Blue met for the second straight year in a row. In the 2015 Disney Duals finals Young Guns Black came away with a (25-22) win over MAWA Blue.

This time around a strong MAWA Blue program was able to not only return to the finals but leave Disney with the Championship Title. In the semifinals MAWA Blue won both 170 lbs. & 182 lbs. to pull ahead of Team Ohio Mafia before forfeiting the final two bouts to win the dual (28-27).

In the 2016 Disney Duals finals fans saw a total of four 2016 PIAA State Final re-matches including; Class AA 126 lbs. Brian Courtney (Athens Area) vs. Max Murin (Central Cambria); Class AAA 170 lbs. Michael Labriola (Bethlehem Catholic) vs. Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park); Class AA 195 lbs. Gavin Hoffman (Montoursville Area) vs. Bill Bowlen (Jefferson Morgan); and Class AA 220 lbs. Cole Nye (Bishop McDevitt) vs. Josiah Jones (Bishop McCort).

Of those four re-matches all but three were won by the 2016 State Champion except at 126 lbs. where 2015 PIAA State Champion Max Murin (Central Cambria) turned the tables on Brian Courtney (Athens Area). In March Courtney capped his historic run to his first PIAA State Championship with a (3-2) win over the returning PIAA State Champion. This time around Murin was able to hold on for a (3-2) win to help keep Young Guns Black alive in the dual meet.

At 106 lbs. PIAA State Runner-up Jaret Lane (Southern Columbia Area) picked up crucial bonus points by pinning freshman Colton Camacho (Franklin Regional). MAWA Blue followed the win up with two major decisions, the first by BECA rookie Ryan Anderson at 113 lbs., and followed up with PIAA State Runner-up Austin DeSanto (Exeter Township) who earned a (18-9) major at 120 lbs.

Murin stopped MAWA Blue’s run but PIAA State Medalist KJ Fenstermacher (Liberty) rolled to a major decision at 132 lbs. over Dominic Means (Central Catholic). Young Guns Black got back on the board when 2x PIAA State Medalist Justin McCoy (Chestnut Ridge) defeated 2016 PIAA State Runner-up Jimmy Hoffman (Hazleton Area) at 138 lbs. in sudden victory (2-0 SV). A pair of PIAA State Runner-ups met at 145 lbs. as Easton Area senior Evan Fideilbus topped Robert Patrick (Ligonier Valley) for MAWA Blue (4-3).

2x PIAA State Champion Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford) kept Young Guns Black in the hunt as he majored New Jersey wrestler Nicholas Palumbo (Lenape Valley, NJ) at 152 lbs. score (19-10). At 160 lbs. MAWA Blue all but sealed the dual with an extraordinary win by Nazareth Area junior Travis Stefanik. Facing 2016 PIAA State Champion and Iowa recruit Kaleb Young (Punxsutawney Area) the PIAA State Medalist Stefanik won (3-1) for MAWA Blue.

In the second 2016 PIAA State Finals re-match Mikey Labriola (Bethlehem Catholic) once again defeated Bethel Park junior Nino Bonaccorsi at 170 lbs. this time by a score of (7-2). Lock Haven recruit Jared Siegrist (Manheim Central) competed at 182 lbs. for MAWA Blue and nearly earned a major decision over PIAA State Runner-up Anthony Walters (Bishop McCort) winning (9-3). Back-to-back PIAA State Finals re-matches occurred at 195 lbs. and 220 lbs. as sophomore Gavin Hoffman (Montoursville Area) repeated his win over Bill Bowlen (Jefferson Morgan). In March Hoffman won (6-3) and this time picked up a (5-2) victory for MAWA Blue. Once again at 220 lbs. Cole Nye (Bishop McDevitt) and Josiah Jones (Bishop McCort) went into tiebreaker to determine a winner. In March Nye won (3-2) in tiebreaker-2 over Jones and in Disney he was victorious (3-2) in UTB. PIAA State Medalist Niko Camacho (Bethlehem Catholic) capped a successful run by MAWA Blue at heavyweight with a (2-1) decision over Isaac Reid (Kiski Area) to capture the Disney Duals Championship (38-10).
