Live bout-by-bout updates from the Championship Finals of the King of The Mountain

This year’s King of the Mountain Tournament started with over 300 wrestlers vying for a title in this prestigious event.

Now, the field is down to 28. The championship finals are scheduled for 5 p.m., and only 14 of those wrestlers will walk out of Central Mountain High School with a championship trophy under their arm.

106: Carter Dibert (1), Franklin Regional vs. Kai Burkett (2), Chestnut Ridge: Burkett tried to work the head early, but Dibert fought it off. There was a scramble in the first minute of the match that ended with both wrestlers out of bounds and no points scored. Dibert took advantage of the restart and laced in a single for a 2-0 lead. He followed it up with three near-fall points on a tilt for a 5-0 lead after the first period. Burkett takes neutral after Dibert defers. Burkett got in on a single, but Dibert fought it off and turned it into a takedown of his own. No points were scored the rest of the period, and Dibert took a 7-0 lead to the final two minutes. Dibert took bottom and got to his base with a minute left, but Burkett pushed him out of bounds. Burkett showed some moxie on top in trying to turn his opponent, but Dibert slipped out for a reversal and a 9-0 victory.

 

113: Dylan Chappell (5), Seneca Valley vs. Braden Bower (6), Williamsport: Bower was aggressive early, getting in on a single. Chappell, one of the toughest wrestlers to score on in the tournament, draped over Bower and avoided the takedown. After a whistle, the same scenario played out, but the period ran out with no score on the pylon. Chappell deferred, and Bower took the down position. Bower got to his feet twice, but Chappell was able to use his long legs and leverage to bring Bower down to the mat. Chappell secured a bar and tilt for two near-fall points along the edge. After a restart, Bower slipped out for an apparent reverse, but Chappell somehow hung on and remained in control for a 4-0 lead after two periods. Chappell chose down to start the third and tried a Granby. Once on top, Chappell never wavered and took the 4-0 decision.

 

120: Alejandro Herrara-Rondon (1), Seneca Valley vs. Killian Delaney (2), West Chester Henderson: Delaney, a state runner-up a year ago, reached early for a single, but Herrara-Rondon fought off the attack. Delaney eventually picked the ankle, but Herrara-Rondon used his length to wrap around for the takedown and turned it into two near-fall points and a 4-0 advantage at the end of one period. There was no scoring in the second after Herrara-Rondon rode Delaney the entire period. Herrara-Rondon took bottom to the start the third. Delaney got too high, and Herrara-Rondon came out the backside for the reversal. He rode him the rest of the way for the 6-0 decision.

 

126: Ian Oswalt (1), Burrell vs. Will Betancourt (2), Manheim Central: The two wrestlers spent the first minute of the match in the tie. Each wrestler took a shot, but the other fought it off and a pair of stalemates followed, and the period ended scoreless. Betancourt deferred, and Oswalt took bottom. He got to his feet on two occasions, but Betancourt ripped him down to the mat both times. Oswalt got to his feet and escaped off a restart for a 1-0 lead with just over a minute left. Betancourt shot, but Oswalt sprawled and maintained his lead. The second period ended with no more scoring, and Oswalt led 1-0. Betancourt was on bottom in the third. he got to his feet and jumped free with 1:20 left in the third to even the match. After multiple shot attempts, Betancourt finally got deep enough for a double, but Oswalt wrapped around and forced a stalemate.  The third ended with the score knotted at 1. After a small scramble in overtime, Betancourt was forced to take blood time. The 60-second period ended with a flurry and no points scored. Betancourt chose down in ride-out. He got to his feet on two attempts and tried a Granby on the third. Oswalt held on and didn’t give up the escape and had a chance to win it. He took down and got to his feet in the second 30-second stanza. Betancourt was able to ride him out of bounds to keep the score tied. Oswalt got a leg free and stretched, but Betancourt held on at the buzzer to send the match to ultimate tiebreaker. There, Betancourt took down. He got to his feet on the start, and Oswalt received a stall call. Oswalt got him to the edge, forcing another restart. Betancourt tried another Granby, and Oswalt held on for the 2-1 decision.

 

132: Colton Camacho (1), Franklin Regional vs. Travis Jones (2), Phillipsburg, N.J.: The start of this one featured some tough hand-fighting, a couple of shots, and a bar that didn’t earn points. Jones got in on a shot off a restart, but Camacho was able to muscle out and get behind for a 2-0 lead. Jones looked like he was going to shake free, but Camacho jumped on his back and held a 2-0 lead at the end of one. Jones started on bottom in the second. He, again, looked like he was going to shake free, but Camacho scissored around Jones’ chest to maintain control. Camacho kept the clamps on the rest of the period and maintained his 2-0 advantage at the end of the second period. Camacho was down to start the third. He executed a Granby, but Jones was there to maintain position and not give up points. On the next restart, Camacho rolled and reversed to up his lead. He let Jones go for the escape and held a 4-1 lead. Camacho was too good on his feet, and scored another takedown. He cut Jones again and went to work on his feet to get another takedown and earn the 8-2 decision.

 

138: Drew Vlasnik (4), Seneca Valley vs. Mason Spears, Franklin Regional: The unseeded Spears wasted little time going after Vlasnik, securing a takedown along the edge for a quick 2-0 lead. Spears tried to turn Vlasnik but couldn’t finish. Vlasnik got a point on an escape, and the score was 2-1 after the first. Spears started on bottom in the second. He got to his feet and shook free for a 3-1 lead 40 seconds in. Vlasnik was able to get a hold of a leg, but the wrestlers were along the edge, and a restart ensued. Vlasnik took a shot, and Spears caught him and almost put him on his back for a 5-2 lead. After a Vlasnik escape, Spears scored again and held a 7-2 lead at the end of two periods. Vlasnik escaped to start the third to close the gap. Vlasnik scored again on a takedown, but he ran out of time, and Spears earned the 8-5 decision.

 

145: Kollin Myers (1), Boiling Springs vs. Nick Coy (2), Penn-Trafford: Myers almost scored on a slide by, but Coy locked in a whizzer to fight it off and keep the match scoreless. Coy was able to get a single along the edge, but he couldn’t secure a takedown, and the match remained scoreless at the end of the first period. Coy chose down to start the second and received a caution for starting too quick. He got to his feet again, and Myers cut him to avoid getting a stall call. Coy got in on a leg again, and Myers did a split to avoid giving up points. A stoppage followed because of blood time for Coy. The Warriors ace latched in a single for a 3-0 lead. Myers was able to Granby free. He shot off the escape, but Coy backed off, and the period ended 3-1. Myers chose bottom in the third. There was a scramble along the edge, and after the officials discussed the sequence, no position change occurred. Coy was hit for stalling after holding the ankle with just under a minute left. After a restart, Myers was able able to escape and almost had a reversal. The score was 3-2 in the closing moments when Myers hipped Coy over and scored a takedown and two near-fall points at the buzzer for a 6-3 win.

 

152: Nick Montalbano (5), Seneca Valley vs. Eric Woloshyn (3), Council Rock South: Both wrestlers feeling each other out from their feet. Montalbano goes single leg to a double but they go out of bounds. Woloshyn strikes first with a dump for two points. Woloshyn escapes to start the third and he is up 3-0. Quickly in on a leg and Woloshyn finishes to go up 5-0. Montalbano escapes. End of two and Montalbano takes down. He escapes making it 5-2 Woloshyn up. A funky scramble and Woloshyn ends up on top and he is in control 7-2. Montalbano reverses but it’s not enough as Wolosyhn wins it 7-4.

 

160: Trey Kibe (1), Mifflin County vs. Cole Flanagan (2), Council Rock South: The two wrestlers felt each other out in the initial stages of the match before Kibe scored on single-leg takedown to take a 2-0 lead to the second period. Flanagan chose down, but Kibe was a beast on top, throwing in the legs and running a power half to ride his opponent for the entire two minutes. Kibe took bottom to start the third and scored on a reversal. Once he was on top, he dominated the rest of the way and earned the 4-0 decision.

170: Matt Colajezzi (5), Council Rock South vs. Brent Burbules (3), Ft. LeBoeuf: Burbules secured an leg and got Colajezzi down to the mat in a hurry for a quick 2-0 lead. Off a restart, Burbules continued to applied the pressure, securing a tilt and two near-fall points for a 4-0 advantage. Burbules got a little greedy and loose on top, which allowed Colajezzi to reverse and close the gap to 4-2. Burbules was on bottom to start the second. He tried to spin away, and Colajezzi locked on to a leg, which forced a stalemate. Colajezzi, who received a penalty point, brought Burbules down to the mat after a slight scramble, and another stalemate followed. Burbules got to his feet again, only this time he almost has the reversal. But, time ran out on the period, and the score remained 4-3 heading to the third. Burbules received a penalty point early to increase his lead to 5-3. Colajezzi was on bottom to start the third and shook free and got behind for a reversal to even the match at 5. Burbules got to his feet, but Colajezzi applied pressure to prevent the escape. Colajezzi kept pushing, and it paid off at the buzzer, as he got two near-fall points for the 7-5 decision.

 

182: Jared McGill (1), Chestnut Ridge vs. Julian Gorring (2), Ft. LeBoeuf: McGill took a 1-0 lead, when Gorring was hit with a penalty point. Gorring gained his composure and latched on to a single, but McGill fought it off to maintain his lead. McGill was the aggressor on the restart, grabbing the leg of Gorring and turning it into a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Gorring was hit for a stall call along the edge for walking off the mat. The period ended with McGill nursing a 3-0 lead. McGill took down to start the second. He was able to spin free in the first 10 seconds to increase his lead. Both wrestlers remained active, but neither could score, which allowed McGill to keep his 4-0 lead. McGill cut Gorring to start the third, but the Lions stud scored on a go behind off a shot to pad his lead to 6-1. Gorring escaped, but McGill took the 6-2 win.

 

195: Cole Urbas (1), State College vs. Jake Miller (2), Boyertown: Urbas wins by medical forfeit.

 

220: Duane Knisely (1), Chestnut Ridge vs. Tanner Riggle (6), Central Mountain: Knisely got behind Riggle along the edge, but the two wrestlers were out of bounds before points could be scored. Riggle was in the same position moments later, as he laced in a high crotch but couldn’t score along the edge. Riggle started on bottom and escaped in the first 30 seconds for the 1–0 lead. He got behind Knisely for a moment but couldn’t finish the takedown, which sent both wrestlers back to the middle of the mat. There was a scramble off the start, and Riggle got in on a leg at the edge. Both wrestlers went out of bounds and were forced to the middle with no points scored. Knisely took down to start the final period. Riggle applied forward pressure and drove Knisely into the mat twice. Knisely got to his feet a third time, and Riggle continued to drive his opponent back to the mat. Knisely finally got it done, escaping and earning a takedown to blast out front 3-1. Riggle escaped after injury time to close the gap to 3-2. There was hand-fighting and near misses over the next minute. Riggle got another chance along the edge but fell short. With only seconds left, Riggle tried a haymaker, only to have Knisely catch him for a takedown and a 5-2 victory.

 

285: Colby Whitehill (1), Brookville vs. Jacob Edwards (2), Central Mountain: Whitehill quick off the start gets a takedown. He cranks Edwards over with a bar and that is all she wrote. The Brookville junior wins by fall.
