KOM Quarters To Feature 89 State Ranked Wrestlers
The 2015 King Of The Mountain will feature a total of 89 State Ranked wrestlers in the Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday morning. Six of those wrestlers will look to hold their #1 State Rankings.
Notable results from Friday evening included several highly ranked wrestlers going down. At 106 lbs. #2 Brady Sherback (Greater Latrobe) was unable to solve Nazareth Area freshman #6 Sean Pierson who pulled the (7-0) upset. Pierson was able to collect a takedown and earned back points off a cradle twice.
Two returning PIAA State Medalist will meet at 113 lbs. with #4 Geo Barzona (Central Mountain) and #6 Louis Newell (SV) facing off. Newell survived a close match with rookie #19 Nick Coy (Penn Trafford) coming from behind to score a takedown late in the third winning (5-4).
The two most talented weights of the Tournament, 132 lbs. and 138 lbs., will showcase a total of 16 State Ranked wrestlers in the quarterfinals; ten of those are PIAA State Medalists; four are PIAA State Finalists (Pletcher, Pipa, Trampe, and Sasso). The marquee quarterfinal match-ups are #3 Jake Hinkson (North Allegheny) vs. #4 Riley Palmer (Council Rock South) and #2 Sammy Sasso (Nazareth Area) vs. #8 Joey Gould (Bethlehem Catholic). One of the more surprising results came when #13 James Harkness (Exeter Township) defeated Boiling Springs senior and 2x Maryland State Runner-up Cole Wetzel (9-3) in the Round of 16. At 152 lbs. Nazareth Area’s Ricky Fornaciari bounced back from a disappointing defeat against Liberty earlier this week to knock off #10 Hunter Vogels (Boyertown Area). Unseeded and unranked wrestler Cade Wilson (Nazareth Area) downed #6 Hadyn Smartwood (Jersey Shore) at 160 lbs. and will face #3 Dylan Schwartz (Council Rock South) in the quarters. One of the most highly anticipated match-ups has to be at 182 lbs. with #5 Gregg Harvey (Boyertown Area) vs. #12 Jake Woodley (North Allegheny). Harvey is a PIAA State Medalist and Woodley is one of the most improved wrestlers in the Keystone State.
