Three Keystone State Wrestlers Make Fargo Junior National Freestyle Finals; Team PA Earns 8 AA’s

It was certainly not the best performance Team Pennsylvania has had in the Junior Fargo Freestyle Nationals on Monday – however, there were several bright spots on display. Team Pennsylvania went a dismal two for eleven in the blood round – getting only Robert Gardner (South Williamsport) and Gabe Miller (Pequea Valley) through to the medal round. After 2-time PIAA State Champion Sam Hillegas was tech-falled by Ridge Lovett (Idaho) in the 138 pounds semifinals, it was difficult to stay positive.

The bright spots emerged, however, first coming at 170 pounds where 2019 PIAA State Champion Gerrit Nijenhuis (Canon-McMillan) battled his way into the finals with a 9-6 win over Gavin Kane of Georgia. The Big Mac, ranked #3 in the Nation by Flo, went up 6-0 after the first period but allowed Kane to chip away late. In the finals Nijenhuis will face the #1 ranked wrestler in the Nation by Flo – Patrick Kennedy of Minnesota.

After Luke Stout fell victim to Abe Assad in the 182 pound semifinals, next up came Cole Urbas at 195 pounds. In four out of five matches in Fargo, Cole Urbas has earned four techs, all in the first period, outscoring his opponents 40-0. His closest bout, in the quarterfinals, came against top seed Matt Cover (Ohio). Like Urbas, Cover graduated from high school and is headed to Princeton. He is a 2-time Fargo All-American and was third at the Ohio State Tournament twice. Urbas  was able to score six points in the second period after a 4-4 first period to win it 10-8. He followed it up with a convincing thrashing of Nebraska’s Isaac Trumble 10-0 in 1:48. In the finals he will face Jonovan Smith of California.
