Pennsylvania Strikes Gold in Guatemala at Cadet Pan-Am Games

Not only was it an incredible performance by Team USA, which claimed a total of 20 Gold Medals, but also a dominating performance from Pennsylvania wrestlers who brought home a total of give Gold Medals. Competing in the 2018 Cadet Pan-American Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Pennsylvania Wrestling was represented by several young stars including National Prep Champion Beau Bartlett (Wyoming Seminary/Wilkes Barre, PA) and PIAA State Medalists Sheldon Seymour (Troy Area/Troy, PA) and Gerrit Nijenhuis (Canon-McMillan/Eighty Four, PA).

Two of those wrestlers, Seymour and Nijenhuis, doubled up on Sunday claiming Gold Medals in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle. Seymour only needed to win one match to claim Gold in Greco-Roman at 48 kilograms while he won four straight in Freestyle to leave the tournament with two golds. Seymour’s closest match was in the finals where he won (10-2) over Colombia’s Diego Curevas.

2-time National Prep Champion and Pennsylvania stud Beau Bartlett grabbed a Silver Medal in Greco-Roman but destroyed the field at 60 kilograms in Freestyle winning three straight matches. Bartlett pinned his first two opponents in a total of 1:42 and then won by tech-fall (10-0) in he Gold Medal Match.

State Medalist and Canon-McMillan sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis kept the train going for Pennsylvania when he doubled up on Gold Medals at 80 kilograms. He won three straight matches in Greco-Roman, two by fall in (0:30) seconds, and followed it up with four straight wins in Freestyle. Nijenhuis scored three tech-falls and a fall to claim Gold in Freestyle.
