PA Wrestlers Dominate MAWA Eastern National Championships

The 2013 MAWA Eastern Nationals in Salisbury, MD was filled with PA wrestlers from the Bantom aga division to the Open age division. Several current PIAA grapplers reached the top of the podium in the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association’s Eastern National Championship competing against opponents from New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, among others.

Current South Western freshman and 2013 South Central Regional fifth place finisher at 106 lbs. Owen Wherely captured the 115 lbs. Advanced Division Championship. In the finals Wherely downed Upper Perkiomen sophomore Dustin Steffienino by a score of (6-0). Steffenino was also one match away from qualifying for the 2013 PIAA Class AAA State Tournament as he was the South East Regional fourth place medalist at 106 lbs. At 120 lbs. in the Advance Division the top three place-winners were all Pennsylvania eighth grade wrestlers who should all have an impact in their freshman year next season. Bellefonte Area’s Brock Port captured the title over Council Rock South’s Zach Trampe who was a 2013 PJW State Champion at 117 lbs. Port, a 2013 PJW State third place finisher at 112 lbs., defeated Trampe (4-2) in the finals at 120 lbs. In third place was Matthew Marino who will join his older brother Michael Marino next season in District 1’s Garnet Valley.

Other Advance Division Champions included Solanco’s freshman Wyatt Jennings at 130 lbs., Bellefonte Area’s sophomore Trevor Corl at 140 lbs., Bangor’s sophomore Charlie Sell at 160 lbs., Penn Manor’s sophomore Zebulin Pfeiffer at 220 lbs., and Bethlehem Catholic sophomore and 2013 PIAA Class AA State sixth place medalist Andrew Dunn at 285 lbs.

In the Elite Division North York junior Kyle Koser was dominate en route to his Eastern National Championship at 189 lbs., picking up two falls and a (9-4) victory in the finals. Other Elite Division Eastern National Champions included 2x PIAA Class AA State fourth place medalist Justin Patrick captured the 125 lbs. weight-class, PIAA Class AA 2x State medalist Austin Harry of Lake Lehman at 138 lbs.,and  Spring Grove Area’s Dakota Laughman at 145 lbs..
