Jameel Coles Shocks Undefeated State #1 Cole Urbas In the 195 Pounds Quarterfinals

HERSHEY, PA – Who in the world is Jameel Coles? That was the question I got after the Northeast High senior sent shockwaves through the GIANT Center when he took out undefeated senior Cole Urbas in the 195 pound quarterfinals.

Urbas entered his third straight PIAA State Tournament with an unblemished 33-0 season record and a #1 ranking in the State by PA Power Wrestling. Urbas, also ranked #4 in the Nation by FloWrestling, was third as a sophomore and second last season in the State Tournament.

None of that seemed to concern Jameel Coles who was in his first ever trip to the GIANT Center.

First, a little background on Jameel Coles. Back in 2015 we ranked him as the #5 freshman on the 2016 Top Incoming Freshmen Report after a very successful youth career that included three total Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State titles.

He went to the Phelps School his freshman year going (10-4) on the year and then didn’t compete his sophomore year while still at Phelps. He then left for Northeast High in Philadelphia and returned to the mat his junior season. That year he went 39-3 and placed sixth in the Northeast Regional.

In his final season Coles entered the Northeast Regional undefeated at 195 pounds and advanced into the finals where he fell to Damon Moyer (Liberty) by a narrow 8-7 score.

Fast forward to Friday evening and Jameel Coles was pulling the biggest upset of the 2019 PIAA State Tournament.

“Everyone came up to me, talking to me, telling me basically in order for you to win this match you have to push the pace from start to finish. Literally from the first period to the last whistle – and that’s what I did.

Coles struck first with a re-attack single leg to go up 2-0 with 45 seconds left in the first period with Urbas escaping quickly. In the second period Coles took bottom and worked for an escape as Urbas was warned for stalling. Urbas was attempting to return Coles and he rolled through on a granby and ended up scoring a reversal.

With 49 seconds left in the second period Jameel locked up a headlock and planted Urbas to his back for two and two. In the process Coles was hit with a penalty for an illegal headlock as he brought his locked arm above Urbas’ head.

Urbas, a University of Pennsylvania recruit, stopped the bleeding as he was able to score a takedown as time expired in the second. Urbas escaped quickly to start the third period coming within one at 8-7. The two exchanged takedown attempts throughout the last period but Coles held on for the monumental win.
