District 3-AA Championship Finals to Watch at the Hersheypark Arena

#3 Levi Haines (Biglerville) vs. #8 Noah Frack (Brandywine Heights)

Haines has made a huge impression in his first year of high school wrestling, racking up a spotless 33-0 mark. Meanwhile, Frack, a sophomore, has been solid, as well, posting a 32-2 record. These two haven’t wrestled this season, but they have three common opponents coming into the District 3 Championships. The biggest difference came against Littlestown’s Connor Brown. Haines pinned Brown once and scored another 8-1 decision, with Frack dropping a 5-1 decision to Brown on Jan. 18.

#5 Caydin Wickard (Boiling Springs) vs. #6 Nate Smith (Bishop McDevitt)

These two wrestlers split a pair of one-point decisions during the season. Wickard drew first blood with a 2-1 decision in a dual meet, with Smith bouncing back to take a 3-2 decision in the Trojan Wars at Chambersburg. Smith, a two-time state medalist who boasts a 35-6 mark, is probably the slight favorite thanks to the most recent result and a victory over Cumberland Valley’s Ben Monn. Wickard, who was a California state qualifier the last two seasons and is 34-4 this year, lost to Monn in late December. This could be the most anticipated final of the Class 2A portion of the tournament.

#3 Bronson Garber (Upper Dauphin) vs. #7 Chase Shields (Bishop McDevitt)

It’s hard to believe there is a four-position difference in state ranking between these two wrestlers. Garber and Shields are both three-time state placers, but the Crusaders senior is a two-time runner-up and seems to save his best for the postseason. These two wrestlers haven’t met and only have one common opponent this season. Garber topped Middletown’s Ryan Berstler 5-1 recently, with Shields earning a 23-10 major a week ago at sectionals. If the Wickard-Smith final at 120 is the best, this one is No. 1A.

#22 Eli Tuckey (Biglerville) vs. #8 Colin Leonard (Northern Lebanon)

This might seem like a lop-sided final if you look at past results. Leonard scored a major decision and tech fall over Tuckey during the 2016-2017 season, but it appears this isn’t the same Canners wrestler that took the mat in those matches. Tuckey has already beaten two state-ranked wrestlers — Hamburg’s Kyle Vernon and Newport’s Dorian Gonzalez — and appears to be peaking at the right time. He needs to against Leonard, who finished eighth in the state a year ago and is a three-time state qualifier.
