Austin DeSanto Stuns Nick Suriano as Iowa Rolls Rutgers in Carver-Hawkeye

Once again Pennsylvania grapplers went undefeated for the Iowa Hawkeyes as they topped visiting Rutgers (30-6) on Friday night. Photo of Austin DeSanto by Sam Janicki.

The highlight bout, one that Iowa head coach Tom Brands said should be pay-per-view on the Big Ten Network, took place at 133 pounds between #3 Nick Suriano and #8 Austin DeSanto. Despite a rarely seen double stall call on both wrestlers in the first period – it was an exciting match that saw Pennsylvania native Austin DeSanto (Exeter Township) excel in the third period.

After a scoreless first period, in which both wrestlers were hit with stalling, Suriano took down in the second period and escaped quickly. The 2018 NCAA Runner-up used a level change to grab ahold of DeSanto’s ankle and secure a takedown going up (3-0). With one minute left in the second period DeSanto escaped as the second period ended (3-1) in favor of the Scarlett Knight.

Then things got interesting.

DeSanto took bottom in the third with riding time at thirty three seconds in favor of Suriano. Austin was able to get to and stay on his feet as the ref wasted no time in hitting Suriano with his second stall warning. Now down (3-2) DeSanto again fought to his feet and again a confused Suriano was hit with stalling and knotting the match (3-3). Suriano secured (1:09) of riding time and elected to cut DeSanto on the restart via a stalemate. With a riding time advantage for Suriano the two were essentially tied (4-4) with time running out. DeSanto pushed the pace, getting to his tie on the edge of the mat and striking on a head-inside single. He sat Suriano on his butt and secured the takedown as time ran out.

For the second straight match Austin DeSanto took out an NCAA Finalist and also penalized a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct after the monumental win.

Prior to DeSanto’s win over Suriano, NCAA National Champion Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) got things rolling as he jumped out on Rutgers Nick Denora going up (6-0) and then sticking him in just (0:40). It was the Spencer Lee fans are used to seeing and while his opponent wasn’t a noteworthy one – it was reassuring to see an intense and aggressive Lee.

At 141 pounds Max Murin (Central Cambria) racked up three takedowns on Rutgers’ Peter Lipari en route to an (8-4) decision with riding time. In another bout between ranked wrestlers Pennsylvania State Champion Kaleb Young (Punxsutawney), ranked #5 in the Nation at 157 pounds by Flo, took on #15 John Van Brill. Young jumped out quick with a takedown in the first period and earned a reversal in the second. Young would earn a riding time point and come out on top of a hard-fought win over Van Brill (5-2).

The Hawkeyes and their Pennsylvania studs will next see action at Illinois on Friday January 25th.
