Young Guns Perseveres to Win Disney Duals District All-Stars Division
KISSIMMEE, FL – After Day 1 of the AAU Scholastic Duals District All-Stars Division wrapped up Young Guns head coach Jody Strittmatter was a little uneasy. Yes his Young Guns Black squad left the Disney Duals ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex with an undefeated record on the day, in the driver’s seat of Pool B, but there were concerns. To start, Strittmatter’s 120 lbs. wrestler Nick Coy (Penn Trafford) was injured (0:35) seconds into their third dual match, and would be done for the Tournament with a broken arm.
That meant having to spot their opponents six points each match for the remainder of the 2017 Scholastic Duals. To make matters worse heavyweight Isaac Reid (Kiski Area), a 2017 PIAA State runner-up, suffered an unknown arm injury that left him badly bruised in his first match.
Despite forfeiting two bouts in almost every dual meet on Day 2 Young Guns Black, led by 3-time PIAA State Champion Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford), 2-time PIAA State Champion Max Murin (Central Cambria), and 2-time PIAA State runner-up Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park), won Pool B by going undefeated (8-0). It was a familiar feeling for Young Guns Black who have advanced into the Championship finals every year since 2013.
On the final day Young Guns Black would need to everything they had from the wrestlers they had left. Strittmatter’s club received a bye in the opening round then took on AYWO Yellowhammer from Tennessee in the quarterfinals coming away with the victory (56-14). In the Championship semifinals Young Guns Black looked to advance into their fifth straight AAU Scholastic Duals District All-Stars Division finals. Standing in their way from finals was Team Ohio Mafia.
Always full of the top talent Team Ohio Mafia included studs Jordan Decatur (126), Jaden Mattox (152), Ryan Thomas (160), and FloNationals Champion Mason Parris (220). Being forced to forfeit at 120 lbs. 2-time PIAA State Finalist Louis Newell (Seneca Valley) came up huge against Brakan Mead at 113 lbs. securing a fall in (4:31). The fall essentially negated the forfeit. At 126 lbs. 2017 Cadet World Team member Jordan Decatur was able to outlast National Prep Champion Beau Bartlett (Wyoming Seminary) in a (3-1) decision.
The marquee match-up was 152 lbs. where Cameron Coy, ranked #1 in the Nation, took on Jaden Mattox, who entered ranked #5 in the Nation by Intermat. Coy, a 3-time PIAA State Champion who is heading to Virginia next year, needed a win with Young Guns trailing (15-14). In this first period Coy scored on a takedown but Mattox was able to gain a reversal tieing the bout at two. In the second period Mattox was riding tough from top but Coy managed to earn a reversal to go ahead (4-2).
With Mattox taking bottom in the third period he was able to collect another reversal to bring it even (4-4) with (1:34) left in the match. Mattox cut Coy and the two battled on their feet when, near the edge of the mat, Coy secured a leg of Mattox and pulled him in far enough to collect two as they went out of bounds. When the ref made the call for a takedown Mattox was visibly upset and made an unknown comment to the referee. Upon the restart Team Ohio Mafia was penalized for unsportsmanlike misconduct. Cameron would hold on to win the bout (8-5), keeping Young Guns in the dual.
Jody Strittmatter was faced with a tough decision coming down the wire. Mason Parris (Indiana), one of the top wrestlers in the Nation at 220 lbs., was now up with only two matches remaining and Young Guns holding a (24-21) advantage. With the injury to Isaac Reid at heavyweight Young Guns would surrender six team points for a forfeit. Instead of sending Josiah Jones (Bishop McCort) out to face Parris, Strittmatter forfeited to him and bumped Jones up to heavyweight. With it all coming down to one match Ohio Mafia was ahead (27-24) but, due to the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty penalized to Mattox at 152 lbs., Young Guns would win on criteria if Jones could collect a decision.
At 285 lbs. Jones took on Ohio State Medalist and Nationally ranked wrestler Jon Spaulding. In dramatic fashion the two ended regulation tied (1-1) and in the overtime period Jones earned a match winning and dual clinching takedown.
For the third year in a row Young Guns Black would take on MAWA in the Disney Duals finals which was primarily an all Pennsylvania affair. Last year in the finals MAWA overpowered Young Guns (38-10) unlike 2015 when Young Guns came away with the Championship title (25-22) over MAWA.
The finals would feature seven re-matches between Pennsylvania wrestlers who met during the regular season, including two State Final rematches. The first came at 126 lbs. with freshman Beau Bartlett (Wyoming Seminary/Young Guns) meeting Ryan Anderson (Bethlehem Catholic/MAWA) in a rematch of the 2016 Walsh Ironman Finals. In that match Bartlett captured his first Ironman title with a (6-4 SV) decision in overtime. In a critical bout Bartlett delivered for Young Guns with a (5-4) decision to chip away at (15-0) advantage for MAWA. At 113 lbs. 2017 PIAA State Champion Jaret Lane (Southern Columbia/MAWA) was up (2-0) in the bout against 2-time PIAA State Finalist Louis Newell (Seneca Valley/Young Guns) when came up with a fall and significant bonus points. A forfeit at 120 lbs. to MAWA and a decision for Drew Munch (Wyoming Seminary/MAWA) made it (15-0) after three.
One of the biggest wins for Strittmatter came at 132 lbs. when Hempfield Area junior Luke Kemerer (Young Guns) took down 2-time PIAA State Champion Brian Courtney (Athens/MAWA) with a (6-4) decision. 2-time PIAA State Champion Max Murin (Central Cambria/Young Guns) replicated his in-season win over Jimmy Hoffman (Hazleton/MAWA) with a (10-3) decision while 2017 PIAA State Champion Justin McCoy (Chestnut Ridge/Young Guns) reversed his earlier result against Brock Port (Bellefonte) from the 2016 King of the Mountain finals, this time around McCoy came out on top (12-5). In a re-match of the 2017 PIAA State Finals at 152 lbs. 3-time PIAA State Champion Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford/Young Guns) again upended sophomore Carter Starocci (Cathedral Prep/MAWA) by a score of (12-5). Coy’s win was the third straight victory by Young Guns where they fell one point shy of earning a major decision.
At 160 lbs. Jared McGill (Chestnut Ridge/Young Guns) defeated 2017 PIAA State Champion Creighton Edsell (Wyalusing Valley) in a critical bout. Strittmatter stated McGill has been “on a mission right now” showing much improvement. Trent Hidlay (Mifflin County/MAWA) responded when he replicated his win from the POWERade semifinals with a (7-2) decision over Tim Wallace (Albert Gallatin/Young Guns) at 170 lbs.
For Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park/Young Guns) his defeat to Travis Stefanick (Nazareth/MAWA) in the PIAA State Finals left him disappointed for the second year in a row coming up just shy of a State Championship. Nino would get his revenge, however, in Disney with a (2-1) decision over Stefanick. Once again it was a critical victory for Young Guns.
In the next two bouts Team MAWA came away with crucial overtime victories by a pair of 2-time PIAA State Champions. Jake Woodley (North Allegheny/MAWA) took down 2-time PIAA State Finalist Anthony Walters (Bishop McCort/Young Guns) in tiebreaker (2-1 TB) at 1295 lbs. and Gavin Hoffman (Montoursville/MAWA) needed sudden victory to get past 2-time PIAA State Finalist Josiah Jones (Bishop McCort/Young Guns) at 220 lbs. score (3-1 SV). Once again it would come down to heavyweight – this time Isaac Reid (Kiski/Young Guns) would give it a go despite the nasty looking bruise on his right arm. The 2017 PIAA State runner-up faced a tall task in 2-time PIAA State Medalist Niko Camacho (Bethlehem Catholic/MAWA) but the junior delivered grabbing a (5-2) decision for the victory and bring the team score even at (24-24) after fourteen bouts.
With Reid’s victory he would effectively seal the win for Championship title for Young Guns on criteria d – most individual wins with a total of eight.
Jody Strittmatter summed up the gutsy performance as “amazing.”
“It was a total team effort. Every match we had to keep fighting for every single point we could get. We talked about it a lot through the week. These guys are close like brothers. They were going to fight as hard as they could for each other.”
