Two Pennsylvanians Named NCAA Head Wrestling Coaches

Former State College Area High School standout Matt Storniolo has been named the head coach of Division I program Northwestern (Photo From Northwestern Athletics). A 2002 PIAA State Champion for State College Storniolo finished his senior season undefeated (33-0) and helped the Little Lions to a Runner-up finish in the Individual team race. Prior to his senior season at State College Storniolo spent three years at prep program The Haverford School outside of Philadelphia. He was a 3x PAISWT State Champion and in 2001 was a National Prep Champion.

Following high school Matt stayed close to home to attend Penn State where he was a BIG10 Runner-up and National Qualifier which earned him Freshman of the Year Honors. Storniolo then transferred to Oklahoma University where he spent three seasons competing for the Sooners. A 4x NCAA National Qualifier Matt earned All-American honors twice in his career finishing seventh as a sophomore and fourth as a junior.

Matt spent two seasons at Old Dominion University as a volunteer assistant coach before heading over to Northwestern in 2009. He was an integral part of Northwestern’s success as an assistant coach and in October 2015 he was named the interim head coach of the Wildcats. Storniolo will now officially take over as the head coach with the interim tag removed.

Well known Pennsylvania wrestling figure Steve Mytych was recently named the head coach at Keystone College which resurrected their wrestling program after 25 years. Located in Factoryville, PA Keystone College will compete as a NCAA Division III Program next season.

Mytych has been everywhere and influenced those around him every step of the way. He started his high school wrestling career at Wyoming Valley West before transferring to Pleasant Valley his sophomore year. His final two seasons he spent competing for Northampton Area. He was eighth in the PIAA State Tournament as a sophomore and fourth his junior season. The 4x PIAA State Qualifier and 2x Medalist went on to compete for Drexel where he was outstanding in four years racking up (137) career wins. He was a 4x NCAA Division I National Qualifier for the Dragons.

Following his college career Mytych competed in numerous National and International Freestyle events while he got his coaching career underway. He has been an assistant at both Bloomsburg and Lehigh in addition to the Wyalusing Valley Area High School head coach. Most recently Steve was an assistant coach for National Prep power program Wyoming Seminary.

Both Matt Storniolo and Steve Mytych are exceptional representatives of Pennsylvania Wrestling.
