Stay Woke! Freshmen Sleepers Who Will Break POWERade Brackets

Finn Solomon (Franklin Regional)

113 pounds

Season Record (11-1)

State Ranking: 4th

Top Incoming Freshmen Ranking 23rd

Eastern Area Champion

King of The Mountain Third

The younger brother of Gus Solomon (probably the best wrestler in the State to never qualify for States due to injuries), Finn is a hard-nosed wrestler who can punish opponents from top. He has quick leg attacks and if he can get in the habit of cutting the corner, instead of being stuck underneath, he is going to be very hard to beat. This season he was the Eastern Area Champion and third at the King of The Mountain. His only loss of his young career is to #1 Dylan Chappell who is down at 106 pounds and is ranked Nationally. Nine of his eleven wins this year have come via fall.

Mac Stout (Mount Lebanon)

160 pounds

Season Record (11-2)

State Ranking: 22nd

Top Incoming Freshmen Ranking 14th

Eastern Area Third Place

The youngest of three Stout brothers, all incredibly talented wrestlers, is Mac. The rookie has collected bonus points in 10 of 11 victories this season. His only two defeats are to PIAA State Medalist #2 Ty McGeary (West Allegheny) in the Eastern Area Tournament (7-4) and an injury default. If he gets on a roll expect to see him take out a seeded wrestler or two this weekend.

Kolby Frankin (Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy)

195 pounds

Season Record (8-3)

State Ranking: 3rd

Top Incoming Freshmen Ranking 5th

Walsh Ironman Seventh Place

Panther Holiday Classic Runner-up

Not many freshmen at 195 pounds have the skill-set that Kolby Franklin does. He is mature beyond his grade and already this season has impressed me. He was 7th at the prestigious Walsh Ironman in his first ever high school tournament. At the Panther Holiday Classic he was a runner-up to #2 Max Shaw (Thomas Jefferson) who is the top seed at the POWERade and a senior who was third in the State last year. Kolby has already caught the attention of the National media as well and it should be no surprise if he finds himself on the POWERade podium on Saturday night.
