Stacked POWERade Quarterfinals Feature #1 vs. #2 at 145 lbs.

The 2017 POWERade Quarterfinals are set, and they will feature 71 State ranked wrestlers in PA Power Wrestling’s most recent edition, including a head-to-head between #1 Luke Kemerer and #2 Ryan Vulakh at 145 lbs.

#1 Kurtis Phipps (Norwin) vs. #5 Brady Sherback (Latrobe)
#9 Alejandro Herrera-Rondon (Seneca Valley) vs. Tim Levine (Wyoming Seminary)
#2 Kyle Burkholder (Connellsville) vs. #7 Gary Steen (Reynolds)
#2 Trent Valovchik (Burrell) vs. Will Guida (St. Pauls, MD)

The highlight match here is #1 Phipps vs. #5 Sherback in a battle of WPIAL wrestlers. Phipps, a sophomore, was a PIAA State 7th place medalist last year while Sherback, a senior, is a 3-time Regional Qualifier. Sherback was at 113 lbs. last year but made the drop to 106 lbs. for his final season where he hopes to finally get a trip to Hershey. Returning State Qualifier Kyle Burkholder is also down from 113 lbs. and will take on rookie Gary Steen.

Returning PIAA State Finalist Ryan Sullivan (Shaler) will have his hands full with freshman Ian Oswalt (Burrell) in the quarterfinals. PIAA State Medalists Christian Fisher (Mifflin County) and Frankie Bonura (Moon) will both have out-of-state opponents.

The 120 lbs. bracket is filled with talent as seven wrestlers from Pennsylvania all ranked Top 13 in the State. Top seed and 2-time PIAA State Finalist Louis Newell (Seneca Valley) will take on 2-time State Qualifier JJ Wilson (Cedar Cliff) in the top half of 120 lbs. Wilson survived a tiebreaker bout with #2 Wyatt Lutz (Montoursville) in the round of 16. A pair of PIAA State Medalists in Cameron Enriquez and Darren Miller will go head-to-head as Enriquez is unseeded. On the bottom half PIAA State Champion Doug Zapf (Downingtown West) will take on Virginia wrestler Brandon Wittenberg. Two WPIAL wrestlers will do battle as returning State Medalist and POWERade Runner-up Logan Macri meets Latrobe sophomore Gabe Willochell.

The 126 lbs. bracket is a wild one and top heavy. The one to keep an eye on is #13 Mason Franks vs. #2 Cole Rhone. Franks took out #3 Ed Scott (DuBois) in the round of 16 picking up a defensive fall in a (10-10) bout. Rhone is a PIAA State Finalist and was fifth at the POWERade in 2016. National Prep Champion Beau Bartlett will face a tough sophomore in #4 Patrick Noonan of Stroudsburg who jumped up the Rankings this past week with quality wins. Undefeated State Champion Sam Hillegas (North Hills) takes on sophomore Kenny Kiser who was a King of the Mountain runner-up two weeks ago.

Colton Camacho is rolling but so is the Nation’s top ranked wrestler Joey Silva at 132 lbs. who will take on Bryce Barclay in the quarterfinals. On the bottom half rookie Carson Manville destroyed Nick Coy by tech-fall and he will face #5 Caleb Morris (Waynesburg) in the quarters. Morris was a POWERade runner-up last year. Returning PIAA State Medalist Bodee Tolbert (Bishop McDevitt) defeated Dalton Woodrow (DuBois) and will take on second seed Joey Ward of Moeller, OH.

On the top half two Pennsylvania wrestlers will be in search of a semi finals appearance with top seed at returning POWERade Champion Cole Matthews leading the charge. He faces Virginia’s River Curtis while 2-time State Medalist Noah Levett faces St. Paul Maryland’s Iman Heard. On the bottom half West Virginia transplant and #3 ranked Jackson Henson is doing well in his first POWERade. Wyoming Seminary senior and Pittsburgh recruit Jack Davis will face Noah Castillo of Lake Highland Prep, FL in the quarterfinals. Davis is looking to make it back to the POWERade finals for the second year in a row.

The best match of the quarterfinals could be at 145 lbs. as the top two ranked wrestlers in the State clash. #1 Luke Kemerer and Ryan Vulakh will do battle in the POWERade Quarterfinals. Vulakh is a junior who sat out last year due to being ruled ineligible for transfering from North Penn to Pope John Paul II. He was a PIAA State eighth place medalist two years ago as a freshman. The two have similar styles which could mean a low scoring bout. Two wrestlers who are familiar with each other will face off at 145 lbs. with former POWERade Champion Job Chishko takes on Kolby Ho of DuBois in the quarterfinals. Eastern Area Champion Cam Connor is looking to continue improving as he takes on the #3 seed Ricky Cabanillas of DePaul Catholic, NJ.

Rookie Trey Kibe had an impressive win in the round of 16 against 2-time PIAA State Medalist Caleb Hetrick of Brookville and finds himself in the quarters against Cooper Kropman of New York. Another Pennsylvania freshman who impressed was Cole Spencer of Pine-Richland who will face PIAA State Medalist Brock Godzin (Belle Vernon) in the quarters. On the bottom half returning PIAA State Champion Justin McCoy faces Wyoming Seminary wrestler Benny Baker.

Top ranked wrestler Carter Starocci is rolling and sophomore Nick Delp (Kiski Area) pulled an upset taking down Jake Hendricks of Wyoming Seminary in the Round of 16. A pair of young WPIAL wrestlers will clash with Gerrit Nijenhuis and Luke Stout in a match between #3 and #4 in the State.
