Pennsylvania Claims 35 Beast of The East Medalists Including Three Champions

The Beast of The East is considered one of the toughest tournaments in the Nation for a reason – it features ten teams ranked in Intermat’s Fab 50 including the top three ranked teams; Blair Academy, Wyoming Seminary, and Bergen Catholic. The Pennsylvania contingent, in addition to National Prep power Wyoming Seminary, included nine State ranked teams; Bethlehem Catholic, Northampton Area, Nazareth Area, Chambersburg Area, Waynesburg Central, Saucon Valley, Notre Dame – Green Pond, Central Dauphin, and Garnet Valley. There was only one weight where a Pennsylvania wrestler failed to make the podium and two weights with five of the medalist all being from the Keystone State. Overall, it was an impressive performance for Pennsylvania who walked away with 35 Medalists including three Championship titles.Pennsylvania native JoJo Aragona (Pope John Paul XXIII, NJ) defended his #1 National Ranking by Flo as he downed Blair’s Travis Mastrogiovanni in the 138 pound finals (3-1) to capture his first ever Beast title. The Rutgers recruit was the first of three Champions from Pennsylvania as he was followed up BECAHI’s #1 Ryan Anderson at 145 pounds and senior #1 Ryan Vulakh (Pope John Paul II) at 152 pounds. For Anderson it was his second major title of the young season as he won the Ironman two weeks ago. Like Aragona, it was Ryan Anderson’s first career Beast of The East Championship after finishing as the runner-up in 2016. The PIAA State Champion, ranked #1 in the Nation by Flo, took out #8 Ricky Cabanillas (DePaul, NJ) in the finals (13-6) to win the 145 pounds bracket.

Pope John Paul II senior and 2-time PIAA State Medalist Ryan Vulakh improved on his fifth place finish from a season ago to capture the 152 pound championship. Vulakh, ranked #1 in the State in Class AA, defeated fellow Pennsylvania wrestler Cole Handlovic (Bethlehem Catholic) in the finals (3-0). Handlovic, a junior, is ranked #1 in the State in Class AAA. Vulakh and Handlovic were two of five Pennsylvania wrestlers on the 152 pound podium – joined by fourth place Andrew Cerniglia (Notre Dame – Green Pond), fifth place Luca Augustine (Waynesburg Central), and sixth place Harry Hague (Malvern Prep).

Another five Keystone State wrestlers earned top eight finishes at 160 pounds with Gettysburg junior and 2-time State Qualifier #7 Dylan Reinert taking third place. He entered as the 11th seed but took out the sixth seed and third seed (twice) en route to the third place finish. He was the highest placing Pennsylvania wrestler which included fifth place Matt Arciuolo (Saucon Valley), sixth place Luca Frinzi (Bethlehem Catholic), seventh place Michael Kistler (Northampton Area), and eighth place Nicholas Feldman (Malvern Prep). In the fifth place match Arciuolo, now at Saucon Valley, defeated his former BECAHI teammate and PIAA State Medalist Luca Frinzi (8-3).

In his first Tournament for Northampton since winning his second PIAA State Title in 2017 – senior Julian Chlebove finished in fifth place at 132 pounds. In the semifinals Chlebove took on 2017 Beast Champion Nick Ramio (Hanover Park, NJ) – a rematch of both the 2016 Beast of the East and 2017 Escape The Rock finals at 120 pounds. Chlebove won the 2016 Beast of the East by defeating Ramio (3-2) but was upended by him in the ETR finals a month later in January 2017. This time around Ramio once again took out the Konkrete Kid with a (5-1 SV) decision in overtime. In the fifth place match Chlebove dropped a (3-2) decision to fellow Pennsylvania wrestler and Wyoming Seminary junior Beau Bartlett.
