Norwin senior and Bucknell recruit Drew Phipps won his fourth straight PAWF Freestyle State Championship over the weekend in Chambersburg. Phipps, a PIAA runner-up in March, won by forfeit over Wyoming Seminary’s Christian Dietrich, a Pitt recruit, for the 195-pound junior title. Phipps was never tested in the eight-man bracket, as he recorded a technical fall and a pin before receiving the forfeit.

Central Cambria junior Max Murin captured his third freestyle title, beating Cumberland Valley’s Wyatt Long for the 132-pound junior title. Murin beat Long 11-1 in the final – one of three technical falls in the tournament for the 2015 PIAA champion and 2016 runner-up. Murin’s only close match in the tournament was a 9-6 semifinal victory over Wyoming Seminary’s Jack Davis, who won a prep national title this season.

There were bookend repeat winners, as Southern Columbia’s Jarrett Lane repeated as the 106-pound junior champion while Boyertown’s Tommy Killoran won the 285-pound title for the second consecutive year. Lane by tech fall in his only match while Killoran had two tech falls and a fall.

Riley Palmer of Council Rock South beat Altoona’s Cole Manley, a 2015 champion, for the 138-pound title. Palmer scored a 9-8 victory over Manley, who was up 25 pounds from his 113-pound championship a year ago.

Kiski Prep’s Eric Hong, who was a Cadet All-American two years ago, won the 160-pound title. The Penn recruit beat Mifflin County’s Trent Hidlay 6-2 in the finals after a 10-8 victory over Penn Manor’s Jonah Barley in the semifinals.

Also capturing Junior titles were Pennridge’s Matty Parker (120), Central Dauphin’s Jake Cherry (126), Wyoming Seminary’s Patrick Munn (145), Father Judge’s Trevor Elfvin (152), Beth-Center’s Tony Welsh (170), Malvern Prep’s Michael Beard (182) and Bishop McCort’s Josiah Jones (220).

In the Cadet Division many young Pennsylvania wrestlers shined. Greater Latrobe eighth-grader Gabe Willochell won his third straight PAWF Freestyle State Championship and for the second season in a row over Alex Chelton (Cathedral Prep). At 106 lbs. DuBois Area eighth-grader Ed Scott defeated PIAA State Medalist Beau Bayless (Reynolds) in the finals by tech-fall (12-2). Benton Area’s PIAA State Medalist Joe Klock improved on his 2015 Runner-up finish to win the 113 lbs. Freestyle State Championship. In the finals Klock defeated fellow PIAA State Medalist Dalton Rohrbaugh (Spring Grove Area) by a (12-7) score.

Northampton Area rookie Michael Kistler won his third straight PAWF Freestyle State Championship defeating fellow freshman Patrick Gould (East Stroudsburg Area South) in the finals by tech-fall (12-0). At 126 lbs. Tempe, Arizona native Beau Bartlett, who will compete for Wyoming Seminary next season, won his second PAWF State Freestyle Championship. The 145 lbs. bracket featured several notable participants and in the finals 2015 PIAA State Runner-up Sammy Sasso (Nazareth Area) defeated 2015 PIAA State Champion Cole Matthews (Reynolds) by fall to claim his third straight PAWF State Championship title. In 2015 Sasso was a Fargo Cadet National Champion in Freestyle at 132 lbs. Fellow 2015 Fargo Cadet All-American Ian Malesiewski (Cathedral Prep) won the 195 lbs. bracket.

Other Cadet Freestyle PAWF State Champions included 88 lbs. Chris Kim (Wissahickon), 94 lbs. Nathan Lackman (Wilson), 132 lbs. Matthew Milbrand (Bloomsburg), 138 lbs. Carnell Andrews (Bishop McCort), 152 lbs. Jake Hendricks (Wyoming Seminary), 160 lbs. Josh Stillings (Pennridge), 170 lbs. Tim Wallace (Albert Gallatin), 182 lbs. Julian Gorring (Fort LeBoeuf),  220 lbs. Bishop McCoy (South Side), and 285 lbs. Cody Williams (Chambersburg Area).
