Night of Champions in 50th Annual POWERade Finals

It was a night of memories in Canon-McMillan High School for the 50th Annual POWERade Tournament as fans took a trip down memory lane with a remarkable video highlighting the Tournament’s rich history. Some of the biggest names in wrestling have competed in the POWERade including 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist Kyle Snyder, Olympians Frank Molinaro and Jake Herbert, plus NCAA stars Teague Moore and Nate Carr.

Eleven Keystone State grapplers left Cannonsburg with the ultimate prize capturing POWERade Gold in their respective weights. Even more impressive was the total number of Pennsylvania POWERade Medalists that reached 76 in the top eight. Leading the way were a pair of National stars each winning their third career POWERade Championships as senior Spencer Lee and junior Gavin Teasdale each continued their undefeated careers. Spencer Lee dominated his way to the 126 lbs. crown while Gavin Teasdale closed the night out with a decisive victory over Logan Macri at 120 lbs.

The next four timer could be North Hills wrestler Sam Hillegas who stole the show at 113 lbs. when he won the Championship title from an unseeded position knocking off the fifth seed, fourth seed, and top seed Louis Newell (Seneca Valley) to advance into the Championship finals. In the semifinals the #2 Top Incoming Freshman in the Pennsylvania faced his toughest challenge of his young career meeting the top ranked wrestler Louis Newell. Hillegas scored a takedown in the third period to go ahead and claim the win (4-2) over the 2016 PIAA State Runner-up. In the finals Sam continued his streak taking out senior Jacob Dunlop (Belle Vernon) scoring a takedown and reversal. The performance earned Hillegas the Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler Award.

Wyoming Seminary senior and former PIAA State Champion Jake Riegel won his second straight POWERade Championship at 132 lbs. picking up a (4-2) decision over Caleb Morris (Waynesburg Central) in the finals. The next three bouts were all tiebreaker bouts that concluded with Pennsylvania wrestlers getting their hands raised. PIAA State Champion Cole Matthews was a POWERade runner-up in 2015 but this time around he defeated 2015 POWERade Champion Josh Humphreys (St. Albans, WV) in UTB (5-4) to capture the title. Senior Jarod Verkleeren earned his first POWERade Championship fending off top seed Frankie Gissendanner of Penfield, NY in tiebreaker (2-1 TB). Senior Cameron Coy won his second straight Championship at the POWERade as he defeated a very tough Stephan Glasgow of Bound Brook, NJ in tiebreaker (2-1 TB). 

Mifflin County junior Trent Hidlay advanced into his second straight POWERade Championship earning his first title defeating Dale Tiongson of St. Pauls, MD in the finals (7-4). A pair of Pennsylvania wrestlers clashed in the 182 lbs. finals and once again a 2015 POWERade Runner-up moved up the podium as Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park) outlasted foe Cody Mulligan (Saegertown) in ultimate tiebreaker (3-2). It is now the third POWERade Championship in the Bonaccorsi family as his father Mark and older brother Nick each own POWERade gold medals.

In one of the deepest weights of the Tournament the 195 lbs. crown went to North Allegheny senior Jake Woodley who avenged a pre-season defeat to State Champion Gavin Hoffman (Montoursville Area). Woodley controlled the action scoring takedowns in the first and third period to win (5-2). Hometown hero Brendan Furman of Canon-McMillan brought the crowd to it’s feet at heavyweight when he pinned the defending POWERade Champion Ronald Tucker (Lockport, IL) in the second period.

In the team standings Kiski Area finished as the Tournament’s Team Runner-up behind Wyoming Seminary while Reynolds with fifth.
