Pennsylvania Blues in St. Louis During NCAA Nationals Round of 16

ST. LOUIS – Pennsylvania Wrestling had a rough Thursday night in St. Louis during the NCAA Championship Round of 16. With a total of 23 wrestlers competing for a spot in the quarterfinals only eight from Keystone State advanced. It was a disappointing round for several Pennsylvania stars inside the Scottrade Center.

The few bright spots included four Penn State Nittany Lion wrestlers who made up half of Pennsylvania’s quarterfinalists. Studs Zain Retherford (Benton Area) and Jason Nolf (Kittanning) cruised into the quarterfinals at 149 lbs. and 157 lbs. while teammates Vincenzo Joseph (Central Catholic) and Matt McCutcheon (Kiski Area) each had impressive wins at 165 lbs. and 197 lbs. respectively.

At 133 lbs. Scotty Parker (Pennridge) of Lehigh nearly upset Zane Richards (Illinois) in sudden victory but was hit for stalling to end the match (7-6 SV). True freshman Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) of Ohio State had returning All-American Anthony Ashnault on the ropes at 141 lbs. but gave up a late lead to fall (8-7). In addition to Zain at 149 lbs. returning All-American Solomon Chishko (Canon-McMillan) of Virginia Tech advanced into the quarterfinals with a fall. Iowa’s redshirt freshman Michael Kemerer (Franklin Regional) continued to roll at 157 lbs. with a tech-fall in the Round of 16.

Of the 49 Pennsylvania wrestlers who started the day a total of 38 will return to competition on Friday with 8 in the quarterfinals and 30 who will be wrestling in the consolation round in hopes of wrestling back.
