STORYLINES TO WATCH

Individual star power: There are plenty of high-ranking wrestlers scattered across the 14 weight classes. A total of 43 wrestlers from Class 2A and 40 more in Class 3A from the PA Power Wrestling rankings are scheduled to compete in this week’s MyHOUSE Trojan Wars at Chambersburg High School. Breaking it down, there are 13 top-five ranked Class 2A competitors and eight top-five Class 3A-ranked wrestlers in the field. This could be a preview of things to come at Hershey’s Giant Center in March.

Speaking of state flavor …: A trio of state runner-up finishers from last year’s PIAA Championships are in the field this weekend. Bishop McDevitt’s Chase Shields (132), Boiling Springs’ Kollin Myers (145), and Chambersburg’s Luke Nichter (170) are the top seeds in their respective weights. There is also a pair of state third-place finishers present. Notre Dame-Green Pond’s Richie Markulics (132) and Southern Columbia’s Gaige Garcia (195) will be competing. Markulics is seeded No. 2 at his weight, with Garcia leading the way in the upper weight.

Stacked weight: If you are looking for the best weight of this tournament, you won’t have to go far. The 132-pound bracket is loaded. State runner-up Chase Shields, who is ranked No. 2 at the weight by PA Power Wrestling, is at the top of the list with No. 3-ranked Richie Markulics, of Notre Dame-Green Pond, lurking as the No. 2 seed. Cambridge Springs’ Ty Varndell is ranked No. 2 at 138 and is the third seed this weekend. He placed fourth in the state a year ago. Southern Columbia’s Patrick Edmondson, ranked fifth in the state, is the fourth seed in a weight that has star power and depth.

Who is No. 1: Southern Columbia is the top-ranked Class 2A team in the state according to PA Power Wrestling, and probably should be. The Tigers placed second in the state a year ago to Reynolds, who checks in at No. 2. But if you didn’t know what happened a year ago and just look at the seeding for this year’s Trojan Wars, you would think Notre Dame-Green Pond held the top spot. The Crusaders have 10 wrestlers seeded in the 14 weight classes, including Ryan Crookham (120) and Andrew Cerniglia (152). It will be interesting to see how these two squads stack up against each other in an individual tournament.

Injury bug: Injuries have forced Smyrna, Del., to withdraw from the tournament on Wednesday night. That means Joey Natarcola, last year’s Trojan Wars 106-pound champion, won’t be able to defend his title. Despite the loss of the Delaware squad, there is still some out-of-state flavor in the field. Virginia schools Sherando, J.W. Robinson, and St. Christopher’s are slated to compete, and West Virginia’s Washington and Spring Mills are in the field. There are also 21 schools from District 3 will be involved in wrestling action.
