Cole Nye is back at Bishop McDevitt and looking for state team and individual success this season

Cole Nye took advantage of a workout session to talk a little smack to Bishop McDevitt assistant coach Prentice Chapman.

After locking in a takedown on the Crusaders assistant coach, Nye leaned in and whispered to Chapman, “This isn’t freshman year.”

That’s beautiful.

“It was my first takedown on Prentice, and I had to show him I’m not going to let him score on me this year,” Nye said. Read more…

Injury forces Conestoga Valley wrestling’s Lucas Ortiz off the mat for senior season

For the past three seasons, Lucas Ortiz has waged many battles on the mat.

He’s won most of them, including a grueling 3-2 decision over Exeter’s Ethan Stever last Februrary which yielded the Conestoga Valley wrestling star a District 3-AAA championship at 152 pounds.

But as Ortiz puts it, he’ll be facing a different battle for his senior season.

Lower Dauphin wrestling coach Kemal Pegram hoping to add to winning tradition during the 2015-2016 season

Lower Dauphin wrestling coach Kemal Pegram isn’t focused on numbers in the practice room or a hefty schedule entering the season.

It’s all about tradition.

Pegram is well aware of the winning culture this program had between 2006 and 2009. The three District 3 Team Championship semifinal appearances and 2007 crown over powerhouses Central Dauphin and Cumberland Valley that sent shockwaves across the region. Read more…

Mike Nauman takes head coaching passion and expertise to East Pennsboro High School

A trimmed down Mike Nauman walked into the PennLive offices last Thursday for Mid-Penn Wrestling Media Day.

He looked like the old Mike Nauman. The intensity and excitement associated with coaching was back.

Nauman lost that for a while. The fulfillment of being a head coach became a burden in his last few years at Middletown High School, a place in which he was a staple and the face of a winning program. Read more…

Cedar Cliff wrestling freshman J.J. Wilson ready to make an impact for the Colts

Rob Rapsey wasn’t afraid to heap some high expectations on his promising freshman lightweight.

The Cedar Cliff wrestling coach can’t wait to get J.J. Wilson in his starting lineup for the 2015-16 season. Asked if he thinks his 106-pounder can make an impact in the Mid-Penn Conference and District 3-AAA this winter, Rapsey had this simple response.

Northern standout wrestler Jonathan Ross hoping bigger is better during the 2015-2016 season

Now that the 145-pound division of Pennsylvania’s Class AAA has cleared out some, it’s finally time the state’s rabid wrestling fan base learned there were some terrific competitors not named Kemerer or Duggan at that weight last season.

One is Jonathan Ross, who, as a junior at Northern last winter, finished second in District 3 and fifth in the state at 145. Read more…
