Kollin Myers’ injury, quick pins, and more highlight Day 1 of the MyHOUSE Trojan Wars

A strong field of teams from Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia converged on Chambersburg High School for the opening rounds of the MyHOUSE Trojan Wars.

There were very few upsets in the first three rounds of action, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t plenty to talk about. Here are five storylines from Day 1 of the Trojan Wars.

Top seed out for the week: Boiling Springs 145-pound hammer Kollin Myers was the top seed entering the MyHOUSE Trojan Wars, but his tournament was over before the first whistle went off. Myers was pulled from competition by head coach Rod Wright because of a nagging shoulder injury. It’s been something Myers has been dealing with for a while, and it hasn’t improved. Wright did indicate that this was for precautionary reasons and that Myers could have wrestled if it would have been a dual meet. Myers’ availability for next week’s Tool City Tournament has yet to be determined.

Crusaders the class of the field so far: The team standings on trackwrestling.com have Hamburg atop the list, but that hardly seems feasible when you consider Notre Dame-Green Pond has a tournament leading eight quarterfinalists. It even seems more inconceivable that the Crusaders are 13th on the list. Regardless, that should change on the second day of the tournament. St. Christopher’s, Southern Columbia, and J.W. Robinson each have six quarterfinalists, with Spring Grove and Carlisle checking in next with five.

The seeding committee did its job: This doesn’t happen often. The top four seeds in 13 of 14 weight classes are still alive in the championship bracket. The only exception is Boiling Springs heavyweight Damon James, who was defeated by CD East’s Romeo Harvey in the Round of 32 by a 5-4 count. James entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed. How good was the committee? Only six unseeded wrestlers still have a shot at a title from 106 through the 182-pound weight classes. They are Solanco’s Dominic Flatt (106), Tyrone’s Hunter Walk (113), Milton’s Chase Hoffman (138), Great Johnstown’s Brock Moore (145), Selinsgrove’s Max Charles (152), and Archbishop Wood’s Quinn Collins (182).

Quick work: East Pennsboro’s Adam Jacob wasted little time blasting his way through the bracket Friday afternoon. The Panthers ace, who is seeded No. 1 at 113, received a forfeit in his first bout and planted Cambridge Springs’ Kyle Huya in :09 to advance to the Round of 16. It was the quickest pin of the day, but not by much. Notre Dame-Green Pond hammer Ryan Crookham stuck Waynesboro’s Kaden Rouzer in :10 in the 120-pound Round of 16. Jacob is ranked No. 5, according to PA Power Wrestling, at 113, while Crookham, a freshman, is the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the state at his weight.

Watch the Thundering Herd: Carlisle had a strong first-day showing, placing five wrestlers in the MyHOUSE Trojan Wars quarterfinal round, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday. Leading the attack was 106-pound sophomore Noah Clawson, who scored a fall and major decision. He was followed by junior Rafael Portilla, the No. 4 seed at 126. Portilla had three falls, spending a total of 8:27 on the mat. Colton Jumper (138) landed a pair of major decisions, and Colton Zimmerman (152) added a tech fall and pin. Both wrestlers are seeded fourth in their weights. Dylan White, seeded fourth at 220, completed the string with a decision and fall.
