Final Four: State Team Finals Set as #1 Reynolds and #1 Nazareth Roll
The 2017 PIAA State Dual Team Finals are set and in Class AAA there is no real surprise we will be seeing a rematch between District 11 rivals Bethlehem Catholic and Nazareth Area. This will be the third time the teams face-off for the year with each team owning a victory. After falling (40-20) to the Golden Hawks – Nazareth turned the tide with a strong (33-24) win last week. Becahi will be in search of their second straight PIAA State Championship in Class AAA. Nazareth, already improved on their PIAA State Fourth a season ago, will be looking for their first PIAA State Team Championship in ten years.
Class AA had several surprises including Northern Lebanon who went from finishing third in District 3 to appearing in their first ever PIAA State Dual Team Finals. The Vikings defeated District 3 Champion Bishop McDevitt in a heated exchange that ended in a (30-30) deadlock. Having won eight bouts in the dual Northern Lebanon broke the tie winning (31-30) on Criteria D – Most Wins. Entering the weekend ranked #12 was a mistake as they advanced through the Championship rounds knocking off the #2, #4, and #8 along the way. In the finals they will face an uphill battle with the Reynolds Raiders who enter the finals ranked #1 in the State where they have been the entire season. Reynold fought off a scrappy Line Mountain team in the Semifinals (49-12) to advance into the Championship finals. The Raiders will be in search of their first PIAA State Dual Team title since 2009 when they captured their third career State Championship.
