Carter Starocci Captures Cadet Freestyle National Championship

FARGO, N.D. – Carter Starocci never stopped working – not after finishing second in the PIAA tournament, not after outscoring opponents 48-2 on his way to the finals of the Marines Cadet National Championship and not even when the coveted “stop sign” awarded to freestyle champions was just a few seconds away.

True to his style, Starocci kept working to get one final takedown in the closing moments of his 7-2 victory over Arizona’s Aaron Gandara on Monday at the Fargodome.

Only then, after the Erie Cathedral Prep junior-to-be had won the 152-pound national championship, was he able to relax.

“It was a long road,” Starocci said. “Even during the folkstyle season – I was training hard for folkstyle, obviously – but after folkstyle states, I made the transition to freestyle. Ever since, I’ve been working hard in the gym, just working out, getting better every day.”

Starocci, who became the 64th Pennsylvania wrestler to win a Cadet freestyle title and the only one in the past two years, was asked what he’ll do now that he achieved his goal.

“Just take it in, enjoy the moment, feel happy, give myself a long break and, when I’m ready, get back in the practice room and keep getting better,” Starocci said.

If he improves at the same rate he did over the past year, the rest of the country might be in trouble. A year ago, Starocci didn’t place at Fargo. This year, he dominated the field on the way to the title.

“I’m very competitive with myself,” he said. “I always want to be the best that I can be, and I like winning. … My freshman year was my first year in freestyle and Greco. Not to make excuses for it, but that was my learning stage. I was getting a feel for it and every day just willing to learn and get better.”

Wrestling on the big stage, Starocci continued to do what he did all tournament – stay active on his feet by attacking often while maintaining a strong defense.

He and members of Team PA’s coaching staff watched film of Gandara on Sunday night, and they saw that the Arizona wrestler, who was a Cadet folkstyle national champion, liked to stay low.

“I knew if I was on my game and my offense, I shouldn’t have a problem,” Starocci said.

He didn’t.

Starocci was able to get in deep on a single-leg, lift it high and finish to a leg lace 2 minutes into the match. Although he wasn’t able to turn his opponent, Starocci put himself in the driver’s seat.

Finishing leg attacks on Gandara wasn’t easy, but Starocci did it again just before the end of the first period. He shot in on a double-leg attempt with about 40 seconds remaining in the first, switched off to a single – and even a cradle at one point – but couldn’t finish it until breaking down Gandara from a quad pod just before the buzzer.

Gandara responded with a second-period takedown and threatened to turn Starocci with a trap-arm gut wrench, but the Pennsylvania wrestler was able to slip it and reverse Gandara for a point.

Starocci, as he showed throughout the tournament, was not content to sit on the lead. He kept attacking and getting to Gandara’s legs. The perseverance finally paid off in the closing seconds, as he scored one final takedown to cap his title run.

Now, with a stop sign in hand, he can afford to relax.
