Seven Pennsylvania Wrestlers Win Super 32 Challenge Qualifier

The biggest pre-season wrestling event in the Nation is still over a month away but the early entry tournaments for the Super 32 Challenge kicked-off in Pennsylvania over the weekend. The Eastern PA Super 32 Challenge Early Qualifier took place at Muhlenberg College with the top four wrestlers earning early registration for the main event on October 15, 2016. There will be a second PA Super 32 Early Entry Qualifier Tournament on September 3rd at North Allegheny High School.

At the Eastern PA Super 32 Qualifier seven Pennsylvania wrestlers won the Championship title and 30 Keystone State wrestlers finished in the top four. At 106 lbs. Kiski Area sophomore Darren Miller won the Championship in a rather impressive bracket defeating New Jersey’s Dante Mininno in the finals (4-3). The second PA medalist at 106 lbs. was Blair Orr of Episcopal Academy who finished fourth falling to Miller in the quarterfinals (1-0).

At 113 lbs. a pair of District XI lightweights earned top four finishes as sophomore Brandon Kassis (Parkland) finished third defeating junior Logan Ninos (Northampton Area) in the consolation finals (7-0). The lone PA medalist at 120 lbs. was sophomore Sean Pierson (Nazareth Area) who was the runner-up to Lucas Revano of Camden Catholic, New Jersey. The second PA Champion came at 126 lbs. with senior Trevor Tarsi (Nazareth Area) who downed senior Jared Corriere (Wilson Area) in the finals (3-1). Finishing fourth at 126 lbs. was Kiski Area senior Matt Siszka.

Northampton sophomore Devon Britton (pictured) kept it rolling for Pennsylvania at 132 lbs. when he won the Championship with a dominating performance. Britton, a PIAA State Qualifier in 2016, picked up three major decisions and two falls including one in the finals to claim the title. Two additional Pennsylvania wrestlers finished in the top four with junior Andrew Wert (Central Dauphin) finishing third defeating sophomore Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton) in the consolation finals by major decision (12-0).

At 138 lbs. junior Will Evantsky (Scranton) improved on his (2-2) finish from a season ago at the Super 32 Eastern PA Qualifier to finish in second place. In the finals Evantsky fell to John Bruger of New Jersey (3-2). 2016 PIAA State Qualifier Seth Koleno, a junior at Bald Eagle Area, finished in fourth place at 138 lbs. At 145 lbs. 2016 PIAA State Medalist Ryan Vulakh (North Penn), who was a Super 32 Qualifier Champion in 2015, finished in third place as the lone PA medalist. Three Pennsylvania wrestlers finished in the top four at 152 lbs. with Central Dauphin senior Skitch Light leading the way in second place. The Ram nearly claimed the Championship falling in overtime to New Jersey’s Robert Kanniard (9-7 SV). Bangor junior Ed Hay finished in third place receiving a forfeit over Chase Anklam (Pen Argyl Area) in the consolation finals.

A pair of District 1 wrestlers advanced into the 160 lbs. finals with State Qualifier Chase Stephens (Coatesville Area) winning the title over fellow senior and 2016 PIAA State Qualifier Colin Shannon (North Penn) score (7-4). Senior Logan Witwicki (Carlyton) finished in fourth place. At 170 lbs. 2016 PIAA State Qualifier Dalton Group (Susquenita) won the Championship title over fellow PIAA State Qualifier senior Ryan Farber (Northern Lehigh) in the finals (3-2). For the second year in a row 2016 PIAA State Finalist Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park) won the Super 32 Qualifier Tournament in dominating fashion. The Pitt recruit competed at 182 lbs. and had no issues earning the Championship picking up a fall, decision, and major decision in the finals. Nino was joined by Parkland junior Ethan Moscat who finished in fourth place.

Two Pennsylvania wrestlers advanced into the finals at 195 lbs. with Boyertown Area junior Elijah Jones winning the Championship title over Bethlehem Catholic senior Jody Crouse (5-0). At 220 lbs. Palmyra senior Leo Higgins advanced into the finals and finished in second place while Brian Kennerly (Upper Darby) grabbed third place for the second straight year. Exeter Township’s Oscar Daniels won his second straight Super 32 Qualifier going (3-0) finishing ahead of runner-up Ryan Stewart (Warwick).
