The pipeline from Western, PA to Charlottesville, VA is flowing stronger than ever for Cavalier head coach Steve Garland. Coach Garland just landed one of the top Class of 2016 recruits in Pennslyvania and Nation. #4 Micky Phillippi (Derry Area) will be competing for his third PIAA State Championship this season and made the announcement that he will be following several other WPIAL stars to Charlottesville, VA.

Garland secured a verbal commitment from the Class of 2017’s #2 recruit Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford) last season and is welcoming #2 recruit from the Class of 2015 Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area) this year. Phillippi joins #29 Jake Shaffer (Greater Latrobe) as Virginia’s WPIAL commitments thus far from the Class of 2016.

Phillippi, in my opinion, is the best wrestler in the State from the top position and proved that in the 2015 PIAA State Finals at 132 lbs. when he successfully rode out returning PIAA State Champion Korbin Myers (Boiling Springs) for two minutes. Phillippi would capture his second career PIAA State Championship with a (1-0) score over Myers. As a freshman the relentless rookie clawed his way to a PIAA State Championship upsetting Korbin Myers in the semifinals (2-1 TB) at 113 lbs. advancing into the State Finals. There Phillippi earned a (1-0) win over senior Seth Carr (South Fayette) to earn the State Championship. After an impressive freshman season Phillippi was upset by Joey Gould (Bethlehem Catholic) in the State Quarterfinals and had to settle for third place his sophomore year.

George, who goes by the nickname Micky, enters his senior season with a career record of (126-12) and projects to compete at 133 lbs. for Virginia.
