First Round Preview of the PIAA State Dual Team Championships

The 2016 PIAA State Dual Team Tournament will begin it’s first round on Thursday afternoon. There are several first round matches that will be “can’t miss” dual meets between some of the top teams in the State. Below are previews for the top first round match-ups in addition to PA Power Wrestling’s predictions and the Championship schedule.

Class AAA

The most intriguing First Round match-up in Class AAA will be District 3 Champion #5 Cumberland Valley against WPIAL Third Place #9 Kiski Area. Last weekend Kiski was upset in the WPIAL semifinals by #8 Canon McMillan (27-25) in a match that saw PIAA State Medalist Tyler Worthing go from pinning his opponent to being pinned himself at 182 lbs. #5 Cumberland Valley is coming off a controversial win over #6 Central Dauphin in the District 3 Finals and they will be without head coach Dave Heckard for the State Duals. The Kiski Cavaliers are strongest in the lower weights between (106 lbs. – 132 lbs.) and the upper weights (182 lbs. – 285 lbs.). Cumberland Valley is strongest throughout the middle (132 lbs. – 170 lbs.). As always bonus points will be the deciding factor in the dual meet.

A total of 15 State Ranked wrestlers will be featured between these two programs. Junior and returning PIAA State Medalist Joey Blumer (KA) recently made the drop to 132 lbs. where he gives head coach Chris Heater more flexibility. Blumer will face #7 Wyatt Long (CV) in a high caliber match-up that could prove to be a significant bout. Toss-up matches include 126 lbs. and 145 lbs. in two critical bouts. The Eagles will benefit by having #13 Trent Cook (CV) back in the line-up after suffering a leg injury last month.

Class AA

Fans will get to witness a re-match of the 2015 PIAA State Dual Team Finals when #3 Chestnut Ridge faces off with #9 Boiling Springs. Last season these two programs met in the PIAA State Finals with the Boiling Springs Bubblers coming away with their first career PIAA State Dual Team Championship (36-21). Boiling Sprigs graduated a ton of talent and this year has an entirely different looking line-up. The Bubblers are still a very talented team and will give #3 Chestnut Ridge fits. The Lions have one of the most talented teams in Class AA with stars such as #1 Aaron Burkett, #3 Justin McCoy, and #3 Connor Butry. Fans could see a barn burner at 138 lbs. if #3 Justin McCoy (CR) goes against #5 Cole Wetzel (BS). In total 15 wrestlers from the two programs are ranked in the State. Both teams are flexible in their line-ups and often shift wrestlers around depending on match-ups.

District 3 Champions Northern Lebanon will be put to the test early in Hershey as they take on #10 Greenville. The District 10 third place finishers had no issues with WPIAL Runner-up Freedom Area in the preliminary round on Monday night. Northern Lebanon’s line-up is solid top-to-bottom with very few glaring holes as their strongest spots are down low and up top. Combined 14 State Ranked wrestlers comprise these two line-ups. Greenville’s #10 Aaron Gelvin will hope to get points on the board at 106 lbs. against #HM Kyler Anspach (NL). If #4 Gavin Wilkerson (GR) bumps up to 170 lbs. fans could see a potential #4 vs. #6 in the State with Quinn Blatt (NL). Another meeting between two wrestlers ranked in the Top 10 of the State include #6 Blake Reynolds (GR) and #9 Luke Funck (NL) who could face off at either 182 lbs. or 195 lbs. depending on movement. Overall I think Northern Lebanon’s depth will prove to be the difference in the dual meet but don’t count out a scrappy Greenville team.

The Class AA First Round meeting between #5 Wyalusing Valley and #6 Fort LeBouef may prove to be the can’t-miss dual of the day. #6 Fort LeBouef is headed by a trio of seniors #4 Abe Guarriello, #3 Charlie Lenox, and #2 Jarrett Carter who are all capable of finishing high on the podium come March. The District 10 Runner-up’s are strongest in the lower-weights and sporadically throughout the upper-middle weights. On the flip side Wyalusing Valley has a tremendous middle-weight line-up that features #12 Josh Haley, #7 Creighton Edsell, and #3 Collin Edsell. The keys for Wyalusing Valley will be to not give up bonus points down low and win the toss-up matches of 126 lbs., 182 lbs., and, 220 lbs. A key to Fort LeBoeuf’s victory is picking up those bonus points and getting wins from freshman #HM Julian Gorring and senior #20 Lane Reinwald. Depending on how things shake out with match-ups fans could see #2 Jarrett Carter (FL) vs. #7 Creighton Edsell (WV) and/or #3 Collin Edsell (WV) vs. #20 Isaac Bengel (FL).
