Previewing The 2015 POWERade Tournament

The 2015 POWERade expects to be yet another exciting two days of wrestling. Below I take a look at each weight-class and the wrestlers who will be competing for a spot on the POWERade Podium. National Prep power Wyoming Seminary has high expectations at the POWERade despite being without their three best seniors Chris Weiller, Nick Reenan, and Mike Rogers. Pennsylvania programs #2 Belle Vernon Area and #1 Chestnut Ridge could challenge for a top three team finish.

PIAA State Runner-up Aaron Burkett (Chestnut Ridge) is making the drop down from 113 lbs. where he is the number one seed. Burkett is currently ranked #1 in the State at 113 lbs. and will be in search of his second career POWERade medal after finishing fourth last season. Burkett is not the only #1 ranked wrestler at 106 lbs. with Class AAA’s #1 Job Chishko (Penn Trafford) being seeded third. Chishko, a 2015 King of The Mountain Champion, was one win shy last season of earning a POWERade medal at 106 lbs. The #2 ranked wrestlers in the State will also be competing in the POWERade with #2 Jacob Dunlap (Belle Vernon Area) and #2 Derrick Christie (Westmont Hilltop). Dunlap, a junior, advanced into the 2015 Walsh Ironman semifinals earlier this month where he finished in sixth place. Dunlap is seeded fourth and like Chishko was one win shy last season of a POWERade medal. #2 Derrick Christie, a sophomore and returning PIAA State Qualifier, is unseeded and last season went (1-2) at the POWERade. The fifth seed is sophomore Brady Sherback (Greater Latrobe) who comes in ranked #9 in the State. Sherback owns a season win over Job Chishko earlier this month and placed seventh at the KOM. A Top Incoming Freshman JJ Wilson (Cedar Cliff) enters as the seventh seed and was sixth at the Beast of the East last week. Wilson fell to the POWERade’s second seed Kurt McHenry (St. Paul’s, MD) in the quarterfinals of the Beast. Other freshmen in the field are #3 Beau Bayless (Reynolds), #5 Chase Shields (Bishop McDevitt), #11 Darren Miller (Kiski Area), and #16 Ryan Sullivan (Shaler Area). Darren Miller (Kiski Area) could make some noise and his only defeat on the season is to #1 Job Chishko (4-0). Two Class AA wrestlers are making their decent to 106 lbs. with #10 Wyatt Lutz (Montoursville Area) and  #19 Keelan Kunselman (Brookville Area). In total there are 14 State ranked wrestlers competing at 106 lbs.

Undefeated PIAA State Champion #1 Gavin Teasdale (Jefferson Morgan) will come down to 113 lbs. where he is in search of his second straight POWERade Championship. He may have a re-match of the 2014 POWERade Finals where he defeated Delbarton, New Jersey’s Patrick Glory by major decision (13-3). Glory last week won the Beast of The East Championship and is seeded second. The third seed is #2 Alan Diltz (Benton Area) who last season was fifth at the POWERade. Making his first appearance at the POWERade is Pennridge junior #2 Matt Parker who only has one loss on the season, to Patrick Glory, in the Beast semifinals (2-0). Parker is a PIAA State Medalist and owns an impressive win over #5 Logan Macri (Canon-McMillan) who is the sixth seed. PIAA State Medalist Abe Guariello (Fort LeBoeuf) is the seventh seed. A trio of WPIAL rookies will try to make an impact in their first POWERade with #6 Cameron Connor (Kiski Area), #8 Nick Coy (Penn Trafford), and #10 Colton Camcho (Franklin Regional). Cam Connor is a very talented rookie who owns a win over #8 Nick Coy and is undefeated on the season. Sophomore #8 Luke Pipa (Bishop McDevitt) is making his decent down to 113 lbs. from 120 lbs. and could shake up the field.

#3 Charlie Lenox (Fort LeBoeuf) will be participating in his fourth POWERade but first for Fort LeBoeuf. The 3x PIAA State Qualifier spent the last three years at McDowell but is now at Fort LeBoeuf. Last season Lenox was the POWERade Runner-up at 113 lbs. falling to Devin Brown (Franklin Regional) in the finals. Lenox earned the top seed and is a 3x POWERade Medalist having finished sixth, fourth, and second. A trio of returning POWERade Medalists are seeded at 120 lbs. with #7 Gage Bayless (Reynolds) seeded fifth, #10 Hunter Baxter (Pine Richland) seeded sixth, and #9 Caleb Morris (Waynesburg Central) seeded seventh. Bayless, a 2x PIAA State Qualifier, finished sixth at 113 lbs. last season at the POWERade. PIAA State Medalist Hunter Baxter placed eighth last season and is making the drop from 126 lbs. Caleb Morris (Waynesburg Central) placed eighth last season at 106 lbs. in his first POWERade and was a South West Regional Champion in 2015. PIAA State Qualifier Micah Visuwan (Pennridge) is undefeated on the season and comes in ranked #7 in the State ompeting in his first POWERade from an unseeded position. Kiski Area sophomore Noah Levett was a PIAA State Qualifier his rookie season and is currently ranked #10 in the State. Joining Visuwan and Levett is North Allegheny junior Luke Landefeld who this season was a King of The Mountain runner-up at 120 lbs. Sophomore Zach Ortman (Parkland) last season was one win shy of earning a POWERade Medal and enters his second Tournament ranked #14 in the State. Wyoming Seminary sophomore and Hanover Township, PA native Jack Davis will be in the hunt for a POWERade Medal. The sophomore was a Walsh Ironman fourth place finisher earlier this month.

PIAA State Champion Cole Matthews (Reynolds) is looking to stay on top at the POWERade where in 2014 he finished fifth in his rookie season. Matthews improved greatly throughout the season which culminated in a State Championship in March. Now up at 126 lbs. Matthews finished as the Walsh Ironman Runner-up and enters ranked #1 in the State earning the top seed for POWERade. The sophomore will have plenty of competition headed by #2 Ethan McCoy (Greater Latrobe) who last season placed third in both the POWERade and PIAA State Championships. The Kent State recruit was the KOM Runner-up this month falling to #1 Luke Karam (BECA). McCoy was also a 2013 POWERade Runner-up his sophomore season. Only two other PA wrestlers are seeded in the top eight with #6 Kordell Rush (Pennridge) and #12 Matt Oblock (Canon-McMillan). Rush is a former PIAA State Medalist and was a 2015 CV Kick-Off Classic Champion where he defeated #12 Matt Oblock in the finals (6-4). In 2014 Oblock competed in the POWERade at 132 lbs. where he finished in seventh place. 2014 PIAA State Champion Jake Riegel (Wyoming Seminary) will be competing in his first POWERade from an unseeded position.

A very well balanced field of competitors will compete at 132 lbs. with #2 Taylor Ortz (Brookville Area) leading the charge after a descent down from 138 lbs. The 2x PIAA State Third Place Medalist was a 2014 POWERade fourth place medalist at 126 lbs.  Belle Vernon Area sophomore Zach Hartman had an outstanding 2014 POWERade Tournament where he finished in third place at 120 lbs. only falling to Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional). Hartman would go on to place at the PIAA State Tournament and this season is the second seed at 132 lbs. PIAA State Finalist Seth Hogue (Reynolds) was one win shy of a POWERade Medal last season in a heavy 126 lbs. weight-class and is seeded fifth. #9 Mike Stuart (Benton Area), a 2x PIAA State Medalist, will be in search of his first POWERade Medal after going (2-2) last season. There is a ton of talent outside of the Top 8 seeds with a total of eight State Ranked wrestlers who will be competing from unseeded positions. #4 John Pipa (Bishop McDevitt) competed in the POWERade in 2013 where as a freshman he finished in fourth place at 106 lbs. That year Pipa was also a PIAA State Runner-up and last season placed fourth. He is competing for the first time down at 132 lbs. this season and should be a threat. The most intriguing wrestler at 132 lbs. is Chestnut Ridge rookie Jared McGill. Featured as a Top Incoming Freshman by PA Power Wrestling McGill enters his first POWERade ranked #2 in the State after knocking off PIAA State Champion Jon Gabrial (Bedford) in an early season dual. McGill will have to battle through the field as the rookie is unseeded. A pair of 2x PIAA State Qualifiers are also in the field with #11 Carmine Ciotti (McDowell) and #8 Stone Kepple (Derry Area). Keep an eye on sophomore #13 Carnell Andrews (Westmont Hilltop) who made it to the POWERade quarterfinals last season and was a PIAA State Qualifier. He enters ranked #13 in the State at 138 lbs. and will be competing at 132 lbs. for the first time at POWERade.

Wrestling fans are likely in for another fantastic finals showing between two of the best wrestlers in the State and Nation. #1 Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) and #1 Mickey Phillippi (Derry Area) are seeded #1 and #2 at 138 lbs. where both are ranked #1 in the State in their respective PIAA Class. Pletcher downed Phillippi (3-2 UTB) in the 2014 132 lbs. POWERade finals. The two have met countless times over the last three years with the most recent meeting taking place last week where – you guessed it – they wrestled into overtime with Pletcher winning (2-1 TB). TribLive writer Paul Schofield penned a very nice piece on the two wrestlers and their friendship on and off the mat. Both are 2x PIAA State Champions and each are ranked #2 in the Nation by Intermat, Luke at 132 lbs. and Mickey at 138 lbs. One of the more deeper weights 138 lbs. will feature seven total PIAA State Medalists. #18 Shaun Wilson (Waynesburg Central) benefits from his third place finish in 2014 at the POWERade Tournament and is seeded fourth. 2014 PIAA State Medalist Jacob Lizak (Parkland) placed sixth at the 2015 POWERade and placed third in 2013. Ranked #13 in the State Lizak is the sixth seed. Two 2015 PIAA State Medalists round out the top 8 seeds with #5 Jarrette Carter (Fort LeBoeuf) and #7 Jake Hinkson (North Allegheny). Carter was a PIAA Fourth Place Medalist last season while Hinkson was fifth. #8 Joey Blumer (Kiski Area) will be participating in his first POWERade. The junior was a PIAA State Medalist last season finishing in seventh place and this season his only defeat is to #7 Hinkson (3-2). #6 Justin McCoy will look to improve on his 2014 POWERade showing where he went (1-2). McCoy went on to finish sixth at the PIAA State Tournament as a rookie. Add in Wyoming Seminary’s Patrick Munn (Texas) who was fifth at the 2015 Walsh Ironman and 138 lbs. rivals for the Tournament’s toughest weight.

The #1 and #2 ranked wrestlers in  the State are on a collision course at 145 lbs. with UWW Cadet World Freestyle Champion #1 Jarod Verkleeren (Belle Vernon Area) and PIAA State Champion #2 Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford). The juniors have been the top wrestlers in the State the last two seasons with Coy being a 2x PIAA State Finalist and Verkleeren placing fourth at the PIAA State Tournament last season. Last season Verkleeren competed at 145 lbs. and after falling to Hayden Hidlay (Mifflin County) in quarterfinals Jarod finished in fourth place at the POWERade. In the consolation finals Verkleeren fell (3-2) to Good Council’s Kevin Budock who this season is seeded second behind Coy. This off-season Verkleeren reached new heights when he won the UWW Cadet World Championship in Freestyle for Team USA. Jarod is ranked #2 in the Nation by Intermat after falling in the Walsh Ironman Finals to David Carr (Massillon Perry, OH). Coy enters ranked #3 in the Nation according to Intermat and last season was the POWERade, Regional, and PIAA State Tournament Runner-up to Hempfield Area’s Sam Krivus. With Sammy Krivus gone to the University of Virginia Cameron Coy is looking to take over. Senior and PIAA State Qualifier #8 Cole Aaron (Brookville Area) was one win short of medaling last season and will look to break through in his final trip to Canon-Mac. Keep an eye on Wyoming Seminary’s Jake Hendricks – a PA native who was featured on the Top Incoming Freshmen report of 2015.

It will likely be Manville vs. Hidlay Part V. These two warriors have met a total of four times since May 2015 and in the last go around, at Flo’s Who’s #1 Event, Manville was able to figure Hayden out and earn his first win over Hidlay in four attempts. Hayden defeated Manville in Fargo, ND in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman where he was a Junior Double All-American. This season Hayden has been nothing short of dominating winning the King of The Mountain and holding a undefeated record. Ranked #1 in the State at 152 lbs. Hayden Hidlay is looking to get some revenge against Manville at POWERade where last season he was the runner-up. Hidlay is seeded second to Manville, himself a National Prep Champion and UWW Cadet World Champion. Manville, now at Wyoming Seminary, will be making the trip to Happy Valley next year as he is committed to Cael Sanderson and Penn State. Hidlay, who is a NC State recruit, is a 2x PIAA State Medalist and 2x POWERade Medalist will be in search of his first Championship. Mason Manville is no stranger to the POWERade as he competed in the 2012 Tournament for Blair Academy his freshman season at 138 lbs. where he was a runner-up to Zain Retherford (Benton Area/Penn State). Joining Hidlay is #2 Nick Monico (Saegertown) who last season place fifth at the POWERade. A 3x PIAA State Medalist Nick Monico is seeded fifth. Outside of the top eight seeds are multiple State Ranked wrestlers hoping to end on the medal stand. One of those wrestlers is Burrell senior #6 Damon Greenwald who is a returning PIAA State Medalist. Last season Greenwald was (3-2) at the POWERade.

PIAA State Champion #1 Jake Wentzel (South Park) is the number one seed and will look to advance into his second straight POWERade Finals. Last season Jake was the runner-up to Vincenzo Joseph (Central Catholic) but this season is the favorite. Seeded fourth is Belle Vernon Area senior #10 Mitch Hartman who last season finished sixth at 138 lbs. Moving up to 160 bs. in 2015 Mitch is in search of his third career POWERade medal. Sophomore #3 Trent Hidlay (Mifflin County) has been nothing short of impressive in his sophomore season and enters his second POWERade seeded seventh. Expect to see Trent finish in the top four at 160 lbs. after going (2-2) last season. Fellow sophomore #6 Josh Stillings (Pennridge) has seen action at both 152 lbs. and 160 lbs. but will be competing at 160 lbs. for his first POWERade.

Another deep POWERade weight is 170 lbs. where 2015 Walsh Ironman Champion #1 Austin Bell (Belle Vernon Area) is the front-runner. The 2015 PIAA State Third Place Medalist was a 2014 POWERade Runner-up but has been firing on all cylinders this season. Three Top 10 State Ranked wrestlers join Austin Bell with PIAA State Medalist and senior #3 Noah Stewart (Mifflin County) leading the way. Stewart, a 2015 PIAA State Medalist, finished seventh in 2013 and was sixth in 2014 at the POWERade earning him a second seed.  Junior #5 Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park) is seeded third and is in search of his second career POWERade medal but first since his freshman season in 2013 when he finished sixth. Saegertown sophomore Cody Mulligan went (2-2) in his first POWERade last season at 160 lbs. but this season is seeded seventh. The 2015 PIAA State Qualifier is ranked #5 in the State and earlier this month placed seventh at the Walsh Ironman. Rounding out the top eight seeds is Parkland junior #11 Frank Guida who recently returned to the mat after a long PIAA Football season where the Trojans advanced into the State Finals. Guida will be at 170 lbs. where last season he was also seeded eighth but fell one win shy of earning a medal.

By far the deepest weight of the 2015 POWERade is 182 lbs. This bracket is monstrous even without Wyoming Seminary’s #1 ranked wrestler in the Nation Nick Reenan (Texas) who is out with an undisclosed injury. Still 182 lbs. will feature 15 wrestlers who are ranked in the State and a total of eight PIAA State Medalists including PIAA State Champion #2 Greg Bulsak (South Park). The top seed is #1 Kyle Gentile (Pennridge) who will be making his first appearance in the POWERade. The senior and Lehigh recruit is undefeated on the season and last week dominated the BEAST of the East Tournament. The 2015 PIAA State Medalist will have plenty of road blocks in his way including 2015 PIAA State Champion #2 Greg Bulsak (South Park) who last season was fourth at the POWERade and won a PIAA State Championship at 170 lbs. The third seed is Waynesburg Central junior #14 Colin McCracken who last season was third at the POWERade. Jefferson Morgan senior #3 Bill Bowlen, a 2015 PIAA State Sixth Place Medalist, is seeded fourth but last season was one win short of earning a POWERade medal despite a sixth seed. The fifth seed is #5 Josh Colello (Cedar Cliff) who is a 3x POWERade Medalist and 2015 PIAA State Medalist. Colello has shined in his last three POWERade performances placing fifth last season, sixth as a sophomore, and third as a freshman. An additional two PIAA State Medalists round out the top eight seeds at 182 lbs. with 2015 PIAA State Fourth Place Medalist #2 Tyler Worthing (Kiski Area) and 2x PIAA State Medalist #4 Jake Shaffer (Greater Latrobe). Worthing is the seventh seed and Shaffer the eighth. Worthing is down two weight-classes from last season where he was at 220 lbs. and so far his only defeat on the season is to #3 Bill Bowlen. Shaffer placed fifth last season as a junior and fourth in 2013 as a sophomore. Shaffer was a 2015 KOM runner-up falling to #3 Jake Woodley (North Allegheny) in the finals. Woodley, a junior, has climbed to the top ranks with an amazing early season showing. Jake was the KOM Champion and, like Tyler Worthing. his only defeat is to #3 Bill Bowlen. Two returning POWERae Medalists are unseeded with #4 Anthony Walters (Westmont Hilltop) and #13 Tommy Provance (Connellsville Area). Walters, a sophomore, placed seventh at 170 lbs. in the POWERade and went on to finish on the podium in Hershey at the PIAA State Tournament. Senior Tommy Provance was fourth last season at 182 lbs. and is a 2x SW Regional Qualifier. The talent keeps coming as Montoursville Area senior and 2x PIAA State Medalist #5 Garrett Hoffman will make his POWERade debut.

Norwin senior #2 Drew Phipps has been one of the most consistent wrestlers over the last three seasons qualifying for the PIAA State Tournament three times and earning two PIAA State Medals in his most recent trips to Hershey. Last season Drew placed third at both the POWERade and PIAA State Tournament. In 2013 as a sophomore Drew missed the POWERade a season after finishing fourth as a freshman. This season Phipps is the #1 seed but will face a load of talent from both out of state competition and fellow Keystone State wrestlers. Virginia State Champion Noah Bushman (Cave Spring, VA) is the second seed and Good Council Maryland’s Kevin Snyder is seeded third. Last season Phipps defeated Snyder, the younger brother of USA Wrestling Star Kyle Snyder, in the consolation finals (4-2). Sophomore and returning PIAA State Medalist #3 Francis Duggan (North Allegheny) will get a taste of WPIAL wrestling in Canonsburg where he is the fourth seed. Duggan was a KOM runner-up two weeks ago and can greatly solidify his rank among the top wrestlers at 195 lbs. this week. Duggan’s rival #6 Trey Hartsock (Mifflin County) is seeded fifth – the same place where he finished at the 2014 POWERade. In the fifth place match last season Hartsock defeated #1 Conner Buttry (Chestnut Ridge) score (4-0). Buttry, who leads a strong Chestnut Ridge line-up ranked #1 in Class AA, is seeded seventh. Connor was a PIAA State Third Place Medalist as a junior and has committed to near by West Virginia University. #5 Robert Scherer (Burrell), a PIAA State Qualifier, is seeded in eighth and will look to improve on his seventh place finish at the 2014 POWERade. Wyoming Seminary’s Chris Dietrich (New York) was a Walsh Ironman fourth place medalist early this month and enters seeded sixth. Sophomore and returning PIAA State Medalist Gavin Hoffman (Montoursville Area) is ranked #3 in the State and could find himself on the podium.

A strong out of State presence will be felt at 220 lbs. as only three PA wrestlers are seeded in the top eight. #12 Mike McAleavey (Peters Township) is seeded fourth after finishing sixth a season ago. #7 Chad Kuhn enters seeded fifth in his first trip to POWERade and #2 Cole Rickert (Reynolds) is seeded sixth. Last season as a sophomore Rickert went (2-2) at the POWERade but would go on to place seventh at the PIAA State Tournament. The junior enters ranked #2 in the State and should improve upon his showing last season. The biggest threat at 220 lbs. will likely be Bishop McDevitt junior #3 Cole Nye. The former Wyoming Seminary wrestler was a National Prep medalist a season ago but is making his second trip to POWERade. As a freshman Nye went (3-2) at 195 lbs. and was just one win shy of a POWERade Medal. Back in the PIAA Cole is ranked #3 in the State and was a KOM Third Place Medalist. A pair of 2015 PIAA State Qualifiers will look to challenge the top wrestlers with #6 Mike Fine (Belle Vernon Area) and #7 Ben Cerney (Montoursville Area). Last season Fine went (3-2) at the POWERade falling in the Championship first round to Cole Rickert (3-1). Fine was a win away from earning a POWERade medal and went on to qualify for the PIAA State Tournament. Wyoming Seminary senior Will Hilliard (New York) is ranked #11 in the Nation at 220 lbs. and enters his first POWERade seeded second. Hillard was a Walsh Ironman Runner-up this season.

Reynolds senior and PIAA State Medalist #3 Gene Ringer placed fourth a season ago at the POWERade and was a PIAA State Medalist in March finishing seventh. In the consolation finals of the POWERade Ringer fell to Moeller, Ohio heavyweight Joe Hensley (3-0) who this season is the #1 seed. Four additional Keystone State wrestlers are seeded in the top eight with #7 Isaac Reid (Kiski Area) leading the charge. Reid is a talented sophomore who is competing in his first POWERade and seeded sixth. #12 Hayden Rice (Norwin) was a win away from earning a POWERade Medal last season and is the fifth seed. #14 Austin Fife (Trinity) has had a successful senior season and owns a win over #15 Brendan Furman (Canon McMillan). Last season Fife went (2-2) at the POWERade while Furman placed seventh.
